My 1986 gmc pickup just went dead after running about a mile or two. after sitting a few minites, it cranks back up and runs another mile or so before quitting again. what has happened?
Just started after running down the battery due to leaving the lights on.
got a jump start, now it only runs 3-4 min and goes dead. acts like it runs out of gas but isn't! after sitting for 5 - 10 min it runs great again and then dies. could it be fuel filter or fuel pump?
i just had the fuel sending unit replaced. could this be part of the problem?i just had the fuel sending unit replaced. could this be part of the problem?
Yes if this prob happened immediately after the unit was replaced. Did a quality shop install the unit? theres a inlet filter on the fuel pump they call it a sock. It usally comes with a new pump. If they didnt replace it or left it off totally then debris could enter and effect pump function. Also some fuel pumps are defective parts> For a long time we would only install ac delco pumps in gm vehicles because of multiple defective pumps. ac delco always success.Yes if this prob happened immediately after the unit was replaced. Bad connections on battery and starter. Take them all off, wire brush and smear with Vaseline. Also, you may as well do the main ground from battery to chassis.
If your check engine light is on get it scanned. If not pull the camshaft sensor and make sure the magnet is still in place on the cam shaft. You might need to crank it once or twice to turn the camshaft.
i had the same problems about a year ago i took it to my buddies shop hook up the computer and it coded the distributor had gone bad it usually runs about a 400-500 dollars to get it replaced.
Try running a good fuel system cleaner through it. Sitting alot allows condensation to form in fuel tank. Also condensation forms on plugs, etc... Pill plugs and inspect, but do run system cleaner regularly.
Hi there, first of all you must synch the cam/crank sensors. To do this put the engine on top dead center remove the distributor cap and look very closely at the dist housing there will be a 6 mark and an 8 mark loosen distributor and rotate untill the rotor points directly at the 8. The marks are small so get a light and look closely.Clear codes and restart. Is vehicle still running rich?
