I will answer the obvious questions. Yes it's my car. Yes it's my key. I tried the other key. It is as though it won't fit. Details....car was driven for about an hour....rested for about an hour. Then it went to get in my car (2006 VW GTI) and it was as though I was in the wrong car or something. It is my car which was parked in my garage. Also the steering wheel is in the locked position. The battery works. Radio comes on. Is the a common problem? Seems strange. I'm glad it left me stranded at home and not someplace else.
Just had the issue on my 2006 GTi. I used 3-1 oil and pushed the key in until it stopped. If you look into the ignition, there is a little grey tab. That is the part you need to settle back in. I pushed the key forward and back a couple times until I heard a "click". I looked in and the tab had reseeded. My key then went in. Jerking the steering wheel doesnt help. nor does forcing it the key in. Use lubricant and a method to allow the lubricant to work its way into the grey tab. www.nftuboise.com
I agree, Solution #4 is the way to go. Had the same issue with the ignition locked up in my 05 jetta. that gray/white plastic piece was blocking the key and preventing it to be inserted. With a flathead screwdriver I pressed that plastic piece back, either flattening it or depressing it back into a recessed slot. Now my key goes in and out without a hitch.
I had the same problem and have "solved it":
After reading about potential repair cost and lead time scenarios on other websites, and since the car is no longer in warranty, I decided it was worth applying more force since it was likely already broken. With a flashlight & screwdriver, I figured out the blockage in my ignition was due to a plastic guard that was not moving aside sufficiently to allow the key to enter. I finally pushed really hard to actually push the key through this soft plastic guard (thereby breaking it). Now my key goes in fine.
I just had the same problem on my 2006 Jetta and tried solutions suggested. I wasn't able to "force" key in nor did turning steering wheel help; I finally decided to spray just a small amount of rust remover (although I knew it wasn't rust) it did however add enough lubricant or removed other type buildup that I was able to insert key.

Try jimmying the key in the ignition while turning the steering wheel left to right ( yes i know steering is locked, just try it please)

Hey guys, I just had this problem happen yesterday, and then again today. It's the same deal with the plastic tab. What I ended up doing was using a razor knife. The blade is the triangle end type, not the flatblade. I shaved off enough of the plastic to allow the key to be inserted enough to work. Make sure to have some compressed air or Duster to blow the cylinder out.
I have a 2006 Jetta 2.0T and am currently experiencing this issue of the key not going into ANY of my locks and ignition. The glove box key slot is locked, i cannot enter the trunk via the key, the key slot to lock the trunk and gas tank (on the driver door) is on lock-down too! I cannot insert my key into any of these slots. Have no idea what's occurred. Any ideas??

when the steering wheel is locked, simply put the key in the ignition, then turn the wheel and turn the wheel at the same time and it unlocks the key cylinder

THIS JUST HAPPENED TO ME TODAY! The fob unlocks the doors and trunk and the lights come on when I get into the car. Its like there is something keeping my key from going into the ignition. I also had 2 other gentlemen help me try. Its not me.
I think there is some kind of anti-theft device keeping me from inserting my key. it is a 2005 Jetta. Any good suggestions besides "just force it in" or "try turning the wheel"?

a long screwdriver and liquid wrench fixed my problem. It has gotten sticky feeling since then. But so far everything is fine.
I had the same exact problem, but i Have a 2006 Jetta 2.5 (package #2 for those familiar with the 06 models). I have had the car for exactly 3 years, and had just extended my lease for another year b/c I am enjoying the car, it has low miles and is still under warranty until next Jan.
I drove the car to work, and did not move it all day. When I come to leave work my key would not go in. I had someone drive me home to get the spare key and nothing! The tow truck driver tried to help me but he was unable to do anything. I had it towed to the dealer where the service manager there at 6:30 at night told me he had "never seen anything like it". I hope this is something easy to repair and is covered under warranty!
2006 Jetta. Key will not go in the ignition. If the little plastic piece is grey I can see it and move it with a small piece of metal, Is this the piece I need to get rid of?? Hand held key remote does not lock/unlock the doors either. Please help! My warranty is expired and need help asap.
update, still no problems since the Nov 2008 incident. But it did leave me with the uncomfortable feeling that it could happen again. Sorry to see that so many other people have experienced this. In my initial search for the answer, I found that BMW motorcycles have a similar issue. The long screwdriver, & spray lube did the trick.
