I drove through a puddle this morning and a minute later the power steering went out, then the battery light came on. I stopped and turned my van off and got out for a minute. Came back, started it up fine and drove 2 blocks home. Pulled in the driveway and noticed the temperature gauge was on high.

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome to the site. A flashing check engine light can mean internal engine/transmission damage. It may be something else. Since it is on I presume, you need to have it scanned. You may already know this but it has come on because your computer has detected a problem with your vehicle. Take it to Autozone or Advanced to have it scanned. They do this for free. It should show what is wrong. To be honest, this is your best bet. You will know what it is instead of guessing. Since all your lights are acting like this, you may have an electrical issue. The alternator may be going bad or it may be a bad wire to the alternator. Your losing power from somewhere and possibly getting a power surge also. It really needs put on a machine to find it. Electrical issues can be difficult to find. You can start the truck and unplug the hotside battery. If it instantly dies, the alternator is bad. You may just have a bad connection. You might want to change the terminals and possibly the wires. Inspect the hot side wires to your alternator. Test them with a voltage meter to see if there are any differences in current. You really need the computer scan first though. The staff at the auto part store can explain the stored codes for you and tell you what you need for free. Usually a flashing check engine light means engine/tranny problems. This may not be the case though. I believe it may be something electrical.
