Drove through a puddle, power steering out and temp gauge on high, battery light on

I drove through a puddle this morning and a minute later the power steering went out, then the battery light came on. I stopped and turned my van off and got out for a minute. Came back, started it up fine and drove 2 blocks home. Pulled in the driveway and noticed the temperature gauge was on high.

I've seen it happen many times on the older Caravans, if you hit a really deep puddle, the splash can knock the accessory drive belt off of its pulleys. You can just gently pry the belt back on, consult a service manual for detailed installation directions.

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome to the site. A flashing check engine light can mean internal engine/transmission damage. It may be something else. Since it is on I presume, you need to have it scanned. You may already know this but it has come on because your computer has detected a problem with your vehicle. Take it to Autozone or Advanced to have it scanned. They do this for free. It should show what is wrong. To be honest, this is your best bet. You will know what it is instead of guessing. Since all your lights are acting like this, you may have an electrical issue. The alternator may be going bad or it may be a bad wire to the alternator. Your losing power from somewhere and possibly getting a power surge also. It really needs put on a machine to find it. Electrical issues can be difficult to find. You can start the truck and unplug the hotside battery. If it instantly dies, the alternator is bad. You may just have a bad connection. You might want to change the terminals and possibly the wires. Inspect the hot side wires to your alternator. Test them with a voltage meter to see if there are any differences in current. You really need the computer scan first though. The staff at the auto part store can explain the stored codes for you and tell you what you need for free. Usually a flashing check engine light means engine/tranny problems. This may not be the case though. I believe it may be something electrical.

SOURCE: truck was running fine, just

Hi, my name is John I will do my best to assist you.

I suggest that you test the ECU Electronic Control Unit using the following procedure.

WARNING
When removing or installing the wiring harness connector to the control unit, the ignition switch must be in the OFF position.

  1. Using a voltmeter, measure the voltage at the battery, in order to assure that enough current is available to operate the starting and ignition systems.
  2. Remove the coil secondary wire from the distributor cap.
  3. With the key in the ON position, use a jumper wire to momentarily touch the negative terminal of the coil to ground while holding the coil secondary wire approximately 1?4 (6mm) from a good engine ground. A spark should be observed.
  4. If no spark is observed, turn the ignition key to the OFF position, then disconnect the four-wire harness going to the Electronic Control Unit (ECU).
  5. With the ignition key in the ON position, again use the jumper wire and ground the negative terminal of the coil while holding the coil secondary wire approximately 1?4 in. (6mm) from a good engine ground. If a spark is observed, replace the ECU.
  6. Check pin No. 5 of the ECU for ground. If no ground is obtained, check the ECU for poor or dirty connections and tight mounting screws.
  7. Reinstall all connections and check for spark. If no spark occurs, replace the ECU.

Drove through puddle - Battery light came on, temperature gauge all the way up, cold air blowing out of vents

Sounds like it may have blown a hose and you lost all the coolant. IT could also be that the puddle you drove through caused the head gasket to blow. At any rate, this is not going to be cheap.

Power steering went out while driving and battery

If the belt gets wet and flies off, or starts to slip, the power steering and alternator will stop spinning causing this condition.

Check belts to see if they are still on the truck and spinning the pulleys of the alternator and power steering pump.

Have 2007 Santa Fe which I love - problem: Drove thru puddle about 3 months ago - Battery light came on & lost power steering, but after 1 minute, batt light off & steering fine... Then, on very...

the crank pulleys (also called a harmonic dampener) on these vehicle are a fairly common failure. as they begin to break apart, the pulley will begin to have a wobble as the engine runs, causing the drive belts that power your alternator, power steering, etc to loosen off. when the belts then get wet, combined with being loose, they will slip, causing your accessories not to work. hope this was helpful!
