My husband owns a 1999 Honda Accord, automatic transmission. When I recently started driving it, he warned me about a little "problem" that it has: when I put the car in Reverse to back out of a driveway, parking space, etc., the car will begin moving backward then stop - as if the engine power is no longer moving the transmission. I shift to neutral then back to reverse, and it moves again. Sometimes I must shift from neutral to reverse 3-5 times just to back completely out of a parking space. It does NOT seem to happen during the first drive of the day - that is, after the car has sat idle all night. Mechanics have thrown up their hands. The local transmission repair chain offered to diagnose the problem - for $700!! Any thoughts?
Sounds like the car is just slipping out of gear. Keep your hand on the shifter when you back up next time. See if you can feel the shifter move when the car comes out of gear. If the shifter moves up when it happens keep pressure on the shifter holding it back like you dont want it to move forward. And of course if the shifter moves back when it comes out of gear, put forward pressure on the shifter so it doesnt slip out. This might work for now but but i know i wouldnt want to spen 700 for that ****. Let me know how it goes.

I tried several times after reading your posting, but the shift does not move. The feel is either (1) loss of power to the transmission, resulting in there being no more movement backward, or (2) something causing the wheels to stop moving. When it happens, I press on the accelerator and the engine revs; there is just no movement. Shifting to neutral then back to reverse causes the vehicle to move again. Sometimes shifting once is enough, other times I shift 2-4 times before moving enough to back out of a parking place/driveway.
ANYBODY got a clue? Seems to happen most frequently if I have to tap the brake while backing up. Once I do that, it continues to "lock up". No one here (mechanics, transmission guys) seems to have ever heard of this problem. EVERYONE wants us to bring it in to "diagnose" the problem - for $$$
This sounds like an electrical prob. you could have a voltage drop to your reverse solenoid or the solenoid itself is bad. I would check these for sure and chk the shifting linkage is adjusted properly.

The problem begins when my water temp reaches 180 degrees I haven been told its the transmission, but when I first start the truck and put it in reverse, it catches great, and drive right after. Its when it gets to 180 degrees it seems like the clutch gives. It remains in neutral. I recently found out that there was a recall with the clutch I have. i just want to see if that sounds right to you. Oh and it humms after 160 degrees like a power steering hum. But im not sure if that has anything to do with that
When I put the car on, it revs up but but the i-shift system msg appear on the screen. The gear remain on neutral and won't shift on A or R. This happens in the morning
