First, forgive my novice/intermediate status for repairs. I do what I can and reluctantly take it to a mechanic if I cannot. Economics! I have a 1987 Ford Ranger 2.0L 4cyl standard p/u... I wanted to figure out why there is so much oil in the bottom of the air filter tray (presumably coming from the [blow-by?] line from the valve cover filler cap)? There seems to be an inordinate amount, that is leaking into the grommet hole that houses the plastic pin that supports the two (vacuum?) lines under the pan, toward the driver's side—dripping onto the lines. (The Chilton's manual is unclear about the name and purpose of those thin lines for me to be more specific.) This leak is transferring down from there, and (unclear of the exact path) causing me to add about 2 quarts every other week. Why is there this much oil in the air filter pan to begin with? Many thanks for any help! Richard

You have an open hose from valve cover to no where which oil is coming out of....hmmmm, I would think yes..... If you still have a problem with oil blowing out of motor after those are fixed, sounds like you may have back pressure.

Before you start removing the oil pan to reseal it, you need to rectify the leak between the oil cooler and the block. Interestingly enough, (in a pinch) the rubber gasket from the (genuine) Toyota oil filter is the same gasket that seals the cooler to the block. Aftermarket filter gaskets will NOT work. Remove the filter, carefully take off the gasket, remove the oil cooler, take off the old rubber gasket, and put the oil filter's gasket onto the cooler, and bolt it all back up. (You should buy this gasket from a dealer) Clean the area real good with cleaner, and THEN check for additional leaks.
Hope this helps, and THNAKS for choosing FixYa. Please feel free to comment back if you need any additional info. The graciousness of a FIxYa rating would be greatly appreciated.

Check the metal vent tube on the fuel pump. When the diaphram goes out, oil will leak from the vent tube. If that is the problem, get it fixed pronto. Not always but there are some times when fuel gets mixed into the oil when the pump is going out and that thins the oil out. Keep on driving with this problem and you can kiss your engine good bye.
When/if you change the fuel pump out, make sure not to lose the push rod that is behind it. It goes between the camshaft and fuel pump.

Hello, this is probaly your rear main seal on the back of your crankshaft. I would check and see if it is a two piece or a one piece main seal. You sound like a knowledable mechanic so this would not be to heard if you have taken a oil pan gasket off a ranger. I have a ranger and did an oil pan in a parking lot without jacking it up and removing the motor and shock like the manual says so I know that takes some skill. So, look up the seal in your Haynes or Chilton Auto Manual and I would replace this seal. Oil near your starter and the back of the oil pan is a classic sign of a rear main seal. Now, to get the seal in out you can refer to your manual and just remember to torque your rear main bearing cap to the proper torque when your done and also try to clean the bottom of your oil sump screen while your down there that would be a benefit later on. A tip to get a stuck seal out is to take an old wire tester the one that looks like an ice pick; this can push out a stuck rear oil seal very easily. I hope this helps your problem and I wish you the best of luck. If you have any other questions just email me ok.

Sounds like the valve cover gasket, clean off all the oil on the engine with a pressure washer or a steam cleaner and then drive it and recheck for the leak, that way you can pin it down for sure.
