I doubt you can actually fix it "yourself", but you can save lots of money by taking it to a radiator shop instead of buying a used or new radiator. They can replace the plastic tank for the bad side, but it is usually the drivers side because this is where the hottest water exits the engine and causes the plastic to crack. I removed the radiator myself and took mine to a shop and they repaired it for $40........cannot repair yourself because the tank has to be crimped on!!!! And radiator "stop leak" products will not work because they are for metal tanks!!!

Yes a radiator shop may sell you a new tank, some will, the dealer and parts stores only service the whole radiator, as far as plastic welding the crack, it's a watse of time, works for awhile and then cracks open again, have tried it several times.

You can try a plastic weld but they usually dont hold up very well on radiators --a radiator shop verse junk yard even cheaper is a u pull it yard

How do I find the problem to a radiator leak on a 2001 GMC jimmy.

Have to use a coolant system pressurizer, which can be borrowed for free at one of the chain automotive stores. It attaches to the top of radiator where the cap is. Pushes air through the system, and should find your leak. Popular places to look are the bottom of the water pump, radiator itself, and the overflow tank. Overflow tanks can crack on bottom side, hard to find without this pressurizer.

My 2001 Olds Aurora is leaking antifreeze. Someone looked and said it was a cap, that you can only get from the dealership. Any ideas to what the name of the cap is?

the cap is on the 'overflow bucket' near the fender well. Those radiators have plastic tanks on the sides and they will crack over time. Many won't leak until the car is warmed up and the plastic expands, opening the crack.

Where is the radiator drain plug is on 2001 golf tdi

Hi there,

The radiator drain is accessible with the bumper off. It's on the left side (driver's side). The coolant is normally drained by pulling up the clip (you don't need to take it off) on the plastic end of the lower radiator drain hose, near the radiator, and pulling the plastic end of the hose straight off, wiggle a little but don't break off the radiator plastic nipple!

Glad to be of help...

Leaking antifreeze from driverside front behind bumper streaming out what could it be?

your radiator has plastic side tanks that can crack and break, or it might be a hose that has ruptured-either way you will need to remove the top cover or lift the car and look from underneath to see what is damaged,

Where is the radiator drain plug and do I get to it -- from the hood or under the car--1998. Jimmy

It's on the lower corner of the radiator on the side facing the engine. If you pop the hood and shine a light down there, you should see it. Some are on drivers side, some passenger side. Depends on where your radiator hose is. It's usually on the other side. It should just be a plastic plug. Some are hex shaped (wrench for removal) some look like a plastic wing nut. It could also either be black or white.

It's usually easier to get to from the top side bending over. From underneath, the core support (cross member to some folks) is usually in the way unless you scoot back far enough under the truck to look up at the radiator. Doing this is also a sure way to get anitfreeze on yourself when you pull the plug. Been there/done that. Haha.

My 1998 Chevy Silverado has coolant leaking from the radiator at the small metal fitting at the top drivers side of the rad. Is the a seal that can be replaced or does the entire rad need to be replaced?

There's not usually a seal for these, the metal is commonly molded into the plastic sides of the radiator.. Remove the radiator tube and inspect the plastic around the fitting for cracks. If you find cracks in the plastic, then you know your answer. If it's leaking from around the radiator hose you could try replacing the clamp with a hose clamp that you can tighten with a screw driver.

My guess is the plastic is cracked there, and the radiator needs replaced, but you should inspect it first of course.

Good luck

1999 gmc jimmy w 4.3 v6. cannot find oil filter

look under the front of your blazer, just below the bumper, and you will see a little access door in the plastic guard. Open this door, and you will find your oil filter.

Were is my oil filter at and what size is it filter number

Since you are having a hard time finding the filter, I am guessing you have a 4WD Jimmy with a 4.3. They put in a remote filter on the 93 and it is located near the radiator and is accessed by removing the air cleaner (black plastic box on drivers side near the radiator). You need to unscrew the long black plastic strip that is on top of the radiator too. The filter is easy to identify and change at that point.

If you have a 2WD and a 4.3, it is under the engine and aft.
