Trunk will not open with key or release on the floor board. Release feels like it has already released the trunk. The key hole is turned to a position it never was in before, it is 1/4 counter clockwise from vertical. The key will not turn in any direction. If I could get in through the back seats I think I could fix it, but the back seat releases are in the trunk. Thanks!
I was able to unlock my trunk by using a wood pole to operate the interior safety unlock handle, which is located just above the trunk floor, against the rear of the trunk lid. You simply insert the wood pole between your rear seats, while attempting to locate the handle release. When you find the handle, use the wood pole to push down on it.
Then, I had to take the top of the truck mat loose by using a flat head screwdriver to pry the plastic plug holders loose from the trunk. I also had to use a 10mm socket to loosen the trunk locking mechanism. Once inside, I notice the remote release cable ball had dislodged from its slot. I simply placed the ball in its slot and reassembled the trunk.
Problem solve. :)
Hey rob, this sounds like something that happened to my dads mazda. all the symptoms match. in our case, the interior release was being held up when the trunk was shut, rendering both the lever and the key useless. if you have fold down seats you can probably solve it on your own with a screwdriver. the release that is operated by the lever was stuck under the latch mechanism when the trunk was shut. so if you can manage to get the driver in there and pry either the release or the latch free, you will be able to open the trunk or it will spring open.now I don't own a toyota and this was on a mazda, but i don't imagine anyone makes their trunk releases too radically different. so whatever the case, i hope this works for you.
take care

same problem!!
Its Christmas Day and this just happened to me too. Doesn't really help when the release latch is only able to be engaged from the inside of the trunk...ridiculous! I wonder how much the Toyota dealer is going to charge...
