Only does it after making a stop at a stop sign..wont go into any forward gears but does go into reverse..I turned car off and then started again but car in drive and then it would go..what would be making it do this? Is the transmission going out or could it just be a cylinder be going out?
Might have a small leak that causes low oil build up in gearbox. Have it topped up with the right gearbox oil
What model ? Check the fluid level and fill also fluid should be rose pink there's sheath around the shifter cable and if it's broken the transmission is shifting out of gear by itself and when you start it again if the cables in the right position it will stay in gear other moving in and out of grears
Wendy,
Have you checked your transmission fluid level? Make sure car is level, engine running with engine and transmission at operating temperature. The dipstick is located under hood, on driver side behind engine. Typically has a yellow handle.
Check that and report back.

SOURCE: Ford taurus 1995 will not move when started
i have a 2001 ford taurus and it did the same thing a while back, call the dealer and ask them for the sensor that is behind the brake pedal. It is not the transmission .. cost less that 25 bucks to fix and takes about 20 min
SOURCE: transmission
The 5r55w transmisson is known for wearing out the case where the front and middle band servo pins go thru. If it wore the front band servo, it would slip in 2nd. But if it slips in 1st and 2nd it sounds like it could be a weak forward clutch. How many miles does it have on it. If you can get it up into the higher gears, does it slip in 5th. 2nd and 5th use the same band to apply them. Are you gettting and overdrive off light flashing? IF yes, what codes?
SOURCE: 2001 Ford E250 transmission has no reverse gear,
I would check the shifter and the linkage. Even though the shifter lever is moving, that doesn't mean it's moving the linkage on the transmission.
SOURCE: 1999 F250 only goes in reverse, no forward gears.
I believe that reverse is operated by a brake band. So it seems to be stuck. It is operated by a piston, and the seal could have swelled and caused too much friction. But you could loosen up the adjustor so that it is disengaged, in order to get forward gears again. Perhaps you can force the piston to retract as well, once you drop the pan again.
