My reverse went out but only go forward!

I was backing down my driveway and I abruptly shift my gears from reverse to drive now my 1999 Jimmy GMC won't go in reverse. What I can I do solve this situation. Do I need a new Transmission or there is simple solution to this problem. The truck still drive forward but not in reverse.

Thank you,
Art

2001 denali c3 truck parked for 1 week. drove 8 miles parked and an hour later when started up there was no reverse. Will shift through all gears. In drive it winds up before shifting out of 1st. When in reverse feels like neutral.

Arthur,

Shouldnt be a big deal.

Your shift linkage is probably bent.

You will need to go to a trans shop and get it fixed.

I highly recommend AAMCO since they warranty their work. They will have to "unbend" the bracket or readjust the cable play, or repair the linkage that places the car in the proper gear according to your indicator on steering column or dash.

Not a big deal...but then again you could have crushed the synchro gears, but i truly doubt it!

Thanks,
Mark

I have a 2002 gmc envoy, I was backing out of my driveway and went to shift it into drive but it stayed in reverse so I turned it off and now I can't start it what happened.

Maybe the gear selecter has become faulty., if it is in gear, forget what position the lever is in, it will not start You will need a mechanic to look at it I think

Why is car abruptly jolting to a stop in reverse and not moving?

Sounds like the transmission is shifting into both reverse and a forward gear at the same time. Time for a tranny overhaul. But first check the transmission fluid level.

Transmission/97/toyota/camery

I assume it is an auto by what you say. Is the O/D light blinking any codes? It is common in that model for the shift solenoids to fail, one or both, and the transmission then cannot find low gears forward.

Get a readout of trouble codes from a mobile come-to-you mechanic, or your own OBD reader, to see if that is it.

How do you adjust the shift cable on a 1995 gmc jimmy, wont go into reverse or park.

On the 1995 Jimmy, the shift cable can come loose on the mount on the side of the transmission where the cable meets the trans. When it slips, the alignment goes off and causes the driver to not be able to put the trans into park. If you take a long stick you can push the shift arm on the trans to the park position and your trans will go into park.....what you (and I) really need to know is how to take the shift cable mount apart and reset it.

I have a 2001 GMC Jimmy, reverse went out. I have some forward gears, but it is shifting very hard and the gears are winding out too far.

May be some shift solenoids issue. Do you have a service engine light on? If so that will tell what solenoids may be faulty. The shift solenoids are inside the transmission pan and bolted to the bottom of the valve body.

My reverse went out on my Transmission.

The trans is an electronic type, if it is an electronic control causing the problem you should have a trouble code, have a quick test done, Kragen and others do this for free, if nothing shows then the problem may be dirty fluid or a stuck solenoid on the valve body.
