3.4L V6 idles rough and hard to start. Started throwing a P0401 code. Occasionally gives off a sulfur smell. Also blew the tube off the PCV valvethe other day.
If the Catalytic converter is bad the engine will over heat while driving.

When did you last change the spark plugs, distributor cap, ignition wires, ignition coil, fuel filter, or the fuel pump? Any one of these could causing your care to stall. Also, have you been using regular gas or premium as premium gas can cause your engine to not combust properly if it wasn't designed for premium

or the water pump if the car heat is stable so it's ok

check for black smoke at exhaust. stuck choke.... clean with carb. cleaner. could need adjusted. possible stuck float. no quick fix. diry fuel filter. replace.

change plug and wire if its been a while most cars have 90000 miles platinum plugs in them.but the wires wear before plugs.so change plugs and wires.+clean fuel injectors .change fuel filter and air filter.if car still run rough your idling to low.have idling check .

I zip tied the boot to the pcv valve and have cleaned the egr valve and the car is no longer stalling. It is still hard to start and lopes between 500 and 900 rpms at idle or occasionally wants to idle around 1700 rpms (twice that I know of). I know on some Fords they recommend checking the dpfe sensor but can't. find one on the Alero. There is no vacuum leak that I can detect. Is there any test I can run to narrow it down to the egr, map, or catalytic converter as most the things I have read point toward one of them as the culprit. I would prefer to fix it myself as i could probably replace all three parts for less than fixing one at a shop, but i hate throwing parts at it without knowing exactly what the problem is. At least my wife has now learned not to buy GM after marrying a Ford guy.
