I bought a used 89 dodge spirit and it needed a new battery, put into it and i bought one but it kept boiling over so i replaced it again and the car wont keep a charge to the battery the car ran but stalled everyonce in a while, the car now stalls everytime it's put into gear but runs while in neutral and to keep it from stalling while in gear u have to give it alot of gas. i have done a complete oil change even bought a new oil filter and i have also replaced the spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, altinator, new belt that goes around the altinator. i have a fuel filter but have yet to put it on the car has new anti freeze put into it and new gas i would very much like to get this car running
Most probably, the AIC stepper motor is bad, one way to kno, is when the engine slows at idle when you swithc on the air conditioner, and the Idle automatioc control does not correct the RPM dropping from the increased load. An engien that does not maintain correct and stable idle cannot maintain the battery charged, but it could have multiple issues.

idle air control motor on back of throttle body maybe malfunctioning and not allowing it to idle

The problem I had with my '89 Dakota was it would suddenly stop running while driving. After from 10 minutes to an hour I could start it up and drive on. It started happening more and more often. I was in a rush to get the truck running so I replaced both the computer and the timing module in the distributor to fix the problem. However, I suspect the real problem was the timing module was failing causing the engine timing to go out of spec and computer sensed it and shut down the ignition to safeguard the engine.
Good Luck, Bob

My 88 raider did the same thing. As long as I had my foot on the gas pedal it would run but if I lifted off the gas it would die. It ended up being a vacuum line. I can't remember which one (possibly the AAP) but not sure. I did replace the AAP diaphragm and all of my vacuum lines.

then i would replace whats called the hall effect sensor its that black plastic plate you see when you take dist cap off. just pull rotor and lift up the sensor.dist cap is what holds it on.also under the sensor will be a stamped sheet metal piece that looks like the top of a castle wall. make sure its not loose on the shaft.if it is then new dist will be needed
