Apart from the fuse box in the engine bay there is a fuse repository behind the coin alcove underneath the boot release. Fuse 3 for the lighter (I think) was blown. I replaced it and now the climate control console responds and the display lights up.
This cigarette lighter socket.... of course! I jumped into my Outback today to go get new tyres fitted. It was a cold wintery day here in Melbourne so I went to put the heater on. No Luck. Display for the Climate Control was dead. No lights, no functions at all... Damn. I have been away for 9 weeks, I came home to a flat Battery and low tyre. Jump started car left it running while I used crappy 12v compressor which lasted 30 seconds... BLOWING CIGARETTE LIGHTER FUSE. Didn't replace it, went on to use proper 240V Compressor, all good. A day later after using Battery charger on car after it wouldn't start, realise battery is dead dead. Trade in battery for new one. Fit to car, all good. Today, as I mentioned, I realise no heater controls. Search through forums on net to find this.... The BLOWN CIGARETTE LIGHTER FUSE!!!!!! Thanks MIGNUN1
Just went outside now (11:40pm) with torch and pliers and pulled out blown 20Amp fuse. No Spare 20Amp so used 15Amp from next to it (used for height control, not fitted to my model).
Plugged in 15Amp fused, ignition on and then turned on Heaterand it works!
Woo Hoo!
Thanks fixya.

I have a similar problem. My heater does not come on when I push the control buttons.
Same problem and cannot seem to find a cure as yet.
Hi Re my 2003 Subaru Outback H6
My problem with the aircon is with the split switch that is the Auto Climate control switch, a round switch with
Auto (top half) and Off (bottom half) and a bright function the outside adjustment works ie the temp setting but the other functions on the switch simply don't work however the aircon and heater etc works ok using the other switches in manual mode.
Can anybody help as the dealer says to repair it is a complete module recommended at a mere $2150 plus fitting?????.
Could the notion of a fuse or something simple like a reseat of a connector just be wishful thinking?
Also another problem that has been an ongoing fault. I have had intermittent rough running occurring during cruise and when under a bit of load. The problem seems to stop when you plant the foot. Sometimes the engine warning light comes on and promptly goes off when the engine is switched off. This problem has cost me a lot of annoyance and a number of visits to the Subaru service centre quite a few dollars and was finally diagnosed as a TPS (throttle position sensor) switch that was replaced and the problem seemed to be fixed for about 3 to 6 months and it has now come back with a vengence. The problem seems to only occur when I go on longer drives and invariably on the weekend so you can't get to a dealer for diagnosis. Is this a common problem or has anybody else had or got this problem. What was your fix??? My car only has about 115,000km on it.
