Sounds like a bad cruise control switch or a bad steering column clock spring.

SOURCE: cruise control won't work

Does the on light in the dash come on? If not, you may have a broken switch in the steering wheel which is a fairly cheap repair. Otherwise, the controls work through the Printed Circuit Board in your dash (your instrument cluster) and the problem could be as simple as a solder defect or faulty component. The problem is that no Ford Service Technician that I know will touch this and tell you that you need to replace it.

The instrument cluster is very easy to replace but may cost you a few more dollars than you want to spend. I would have someone with an electrical background check the cruise control switches in your steering wheel with a multimeter before going any further with this. Also check the wiring for resistance leading from the switch to the cluster.

SOURCE: 2002 Ford F150. Cruise control stopped working.

Did you have the recall done on it ?
recall 05S28. Description: Speed Control Deactivation Switch.

It could be a blow fuse in the recall harness, if you did have it done.

Try the self test, and see what the results are. If you do not get it into self test mode, it could be the fuse in teh recall harness that is blown. The 1st revision of the recall harness was an inline ATM fuse, not sure if the revision 2 was the same. If that fuse is blown, the switch is leaking, and should be checked.

Self-Test Diagnostics

WARNING:
This test is a key on engine off (KOEO) test only that is conducted in park only with emergency brake fully engaged.

1. Enter self-test diagnostics by depressing the speed control OFF switch while turning the ignition key ON, making sure the engine does not start and is not running. The speed control indicator on the instrument panel will flash once to indicate that speed control module entered the diagnostic mode. Five additional flashes at this point indicate a defective speed control servo. Release the OFF switch.

2. Press the remaining switches in this sequence: ON, RESUME, COAST and SET/ACCEL.

If the ON switch is not depressed within five seconds after entering the diagnostics mode, the module times out and the procedure must be started over.

The speed control indicator lamp will flash as each switch is depressed. Press each switch in the sequence immediately after the indicator light goes out for the previous switch.

Note:
There will be a slight delay when the last button is pressed and the lamp flashes.

3. A lamp flash with the last button (SET/ACCEL) indicates that the static test passed. If the lamp does not flash with the last button and there are no additional flashes of the lamp, the switch is defective.

If the lamp does not flash with the last button, and additional flashes occur, follow the chart below for trouble codes:

— 2 flashes - BPP defective, circuit is defective, brake applied, CPP switch or jumper (if equipped).

I had this same Problem and it was a simple vaccuum hose leak connected to the cruise control module. Try replacing this small hose.

SOURCE: cruise control

The cruise control should have a fuse in the interior fuse block, and a larger fuse and/or relay under hood in the relay center block. Test them with an automotive test light (You can purchase these for anywhere from $5.00 to $50.00 depending on the quality you want and the place of purchase).

If you find a bad fuse or primary fuse, obviously those need to be replaced. Relays can't be tested readily using the light. Unfortunately the simplest method for finding out if a relay is bad is to replace it. The relay for that cruise runs between $15.00 to $20.00 depending where you purchase.

Let me know how it goes and we'll see what more we can do!

I'm having the same issue with mine. Just checked both fuses #5 and #12 under the dash, but both are fine. Can't find Relay #302 for the speed servo. 2003's aren't listed in the recall. Ugh!

Why wont the cruise control work on a 2005 ford taurus but the cruise light comes on

The first thing to check is the tail lights. The cruise control will not work if any lights are out. Changing to LED tail lights also causes the cruise to not work.

2003 oldsmobile alero v6 -- cruise control stopped working...The cruise on/of button lights up, the green light cruise indicator comes on in the dash panel, but cruise control does not engage when CST SET...

Try checking the small switch at the top of the brake pedal. There may be two one for brake lights and one for the cruise control. To ascertain what is what, pull one wire off and see if brake lights work. If not, then the other switch controls the cruise control disconnect and engage..I you have a DC test light check to see if power is on on both side of the switch with brake pedal up. If so, depress pedal and check power on the other side there should be none, if there is the switch is defective.

Cruise control not working in 5th gear ford c max 55reg

Hi, did you already solve this problem with cruis control in european Ford Focus C-Max? I just activated cruis control in my car... It normaly works on 3th and 4th gear (manual transmission). On 5th gear it works only sometimes - I have to put the gas pedal down and then press the "+" or "RES" button, if I cancel selected speed and than again press "+" or "RES" button, the LED of cruis control on the dashboard flash for 1 sec and nothing will happen.

My cruise control does not work on my 2003 Ford Focus

Hi Fred,

There are several things that can cause your cruise control to not function. Anything from a bad speed sensor to a faulty speed control servo. It is impossible to tell you what is wrong without diagnosing your speed control system. Here is a quote from the vehicle manufacturer regarding this issue:

"Start by running speed control servo integrated self test diagnostics. The servo has integrated self test diagnostics which is a key tool in quickly and accurately diagnosing speed control system faults. Self test diagnostics are also the basis for starting speed control trouble shooting."

Please note that a diagnostic scan tool capable of accessing the speed control data is required for performing this task.

2001 F-150 cruise control stopped working. Already checked the fuse and it's good. What's next

really tough to do on the net but first we need to know about any codes...

Hold speed control OFF button, and turn ignition switch to RUN position. CRUISE indicator should flash once to indicate successful entry into self-diagnostic mode. If CRUISE indicator does not flash, start procedure over. If CRUISE indicator still does not flash, repair system by symptom there might be some switch concern

If CRUISE CONTROL indicator flashes once followed by 5 additional flashes, replace speed control servo/actuator.

Release speed control OFF button. Within 5 seconds in entering self-diagnostics, press speed control ON button. Press remaining speed control buttons in the following sequence; ON, RES, COAST and SET/ACCEL.

As each button is pressed, CRUISE indicator will flash.

Wait until indicator light goes out, then press next button. After sequence has been completed, indicator light will flash to indicate test passed or failed. With the codes we can then better diagnose your concern

Immediately after static test has passed, actuator performs a dynamic test by automatically operating throttle .04-.40" (1-10 mm). Observe throttle movement to witness any sticking in cable or linkage. Ensure throttle returns properly. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If self-diagnostics do not pinpoint fault there is more we can do but tough over the net
