The tach first stopped working, and now it appears to work sometimes and working inacurately others. Minutes after the tach stopped, the speedometer became inacurate, slowly rising and pegging out over 110mph. It now appears at 55mph with the car parked. The other gauges (fuel and temp) appear accurate so far.The tach first stopped working, and now it appears to work sometimes and working inacurately others. three of my gauges are bad; temp reads over hot all the time. tach was working then over a period of time started reading very erratic then died, reads zero all the time. my fuel gauge reads half then empty then full then whatever it wants.

My speedometer is stuck at different markers and no longer works at all (it did the miscellaneaous bounce to the speed for a little while) and the tach isnt working at all now. I saw on another site that it would be an issue in the instrument panel cluster and that the motor has probably burned out. I'm not sure, but it's a place to possibly start. My speedometer is stuck at different markers and no longer works at all (it did the miscellaneaous bounce to the speed for a little while) and the tach isnt working at all now. I have a 2005 sunfire as well. My tachometer jumped over and landed on top of my speedometer. The speedometer needle pused it out of the way but once I got above 45 mph the tach jumped back and went under the speedometer and can't get back out. I have taken it in twice and even bought a new battery after they claimed that was the problem. It just broke again this morning for the third time. I dont know how to help you but I can tell you its not the battery!I have a 2005 sunfire as well. My tachometer jumped over and landed on top of my speedometer. 05 sunfire also. It started with my fuel, then my tach got stuck on my speedometer and threw that off. The only thing I have found that helps is taking out the fuse that controls the cluster pannel. Just take it in and out a few times and it resets the gauges. Only temporary solution though 05 sunfire also. It started with my fuel, then my tach got stuck on my speedometer and threw that off. Proably bad stepper motors. You can find the repair on You Tube. You can buy the gauge motors on ebay for $3 ea. It does take some soldering skills to replace. GM wants $800 for new gauge package.
I have the same problem.. i installed a toggle switch for the fuse so at least I can reset it while driving.. its still a pain so Im thinking my next step will be to drill a hole through the plastic and put in a small metal post to stop the tach from going past 7

check to see if nut at the end of wiper arm is tight under plastic cap is tight the side near bottom of windshield if it is the wiper transmission is failed needs replaced
This may sound really dumb, but check your fuel... The 00 to 02 Sunfires had a problem with the fuelguage reading inacurately. Sometimes by as much as 1/3 of a tank. If not that then start at the basics, look for fuel getting to the engine, and spark... If the fuel pump is the culprit you can try having a partner hit the fuel tank with a rubber, or NON METAL hammer while your cranking the engine. If the car starts then dont risk it not starting again, get the fuel pump replaced right away.
if this is a digital speedo you need to replace it if normal then you need to replace the speedo cable. Or you could buy a cheap GPS they have speedos built into them and they work good for getting you from a to z and back to a as well
From 2003 to 2006 GM - chevy , pontiac , buick , cadillac , had bad step motors inside the instrument clusters , causing gauges to no work or sporadically . Happened to my 2005 chevy cavalier , went to automotive salvage yard ,got a used one for $20.00 buck's . That was two year's ago , now problems ! How to repair GM Instrument Cluster Speedometer Gauge Stepper
Or you can buy the up graded stepper motors on eBay an fix it .
