Instrument panels a really tough to fix. The only advise I can give is don't move any wires in there. Wires will always break or short or loosen before you get through.
Check all the fuses that could possibly b the problem before you open it up.
Try it it's probably worth it.

The PCM is located directly underneath the air cleaner assembly (were the air filter is housed.) I have a 96 impala too.

do you smell gas? evap canister. check vacuum lines from evap or purge valve. do not reverse lines. or it could be nothing use obd 2 tool and clear code and see if it comes back..

The est. cost to fix a bad fuel pump in a 1996 chevy impala

$300 labor plus cost of part.. They will not warrenty the work if they don't diagnose the problem so plan on another $100 if you want then to gaurantee the fix.

if after setting for a while will it re-start if so look at fuel pressure regulator chevrolet does not recomend but these are adjustable and will fix problem find good drivability person with gm background can fix you make some calls
