The central locking will to work, with or without key using both he button on the key and the key hole on the door. The only door which the key will open is the passenger door. I have changed the key batteries and that didnt help at all, if anything, it made the keys useless. The driver door will not unlock from inside either so it's becoming a problem getting in and out through the passenger door and hopefully I'm not involved in an accident with the doors like this.

Central locking works by way of little electric motors that engages and disengages the door lock. The drivers door has an additional set of contacts in the actuator which signal the controller when it changes position. The controller activates the servo motors when a signal is received from the receiver or from the drivers door servo motor. So in your case I suspect the motor part of the drivers door actuator is done for.
To replace you will have to remove the inner driver's door panel to get at the actuator. The actuator itself cannot be repaired and needs to be replaced as a unit.

If you can unlock it with the key,and not the remote, then it sounds like the lock actuator is not working in that door.In order to check it, the door panel has to come off.

poss low charge in battery in keys..... nearer you get lower the battery life.....

Hello and welcome to FixYa!
As a first course of action, I strongly suggest that you replace the door lock actuator. It's the motor that locks and unlocks the door mechanism. Once replaced you'll be good.
Hope this helps and thank you for using Fixya! Have a good one!
check the wires in the rubber boot between the door pillar and the door for a break in the wire or loose plug socket ,check for a feed to the lock with a multimeter as well whilst operating the system as i think this is your problem here -no power
