Engine sputters in park and neutral but this problem disappears when the ac is running. Any thoughts?

Engine "coughs" every 3 seconds in neutral and park, but when I turn the air conditioner on this problem disappears. Also there is not sputtering while I am driving even without the ac. I replaced plugs, added gumout and new fuel (car has been sitting unused for a long time). Also re-filled the coolant reservoir. AC is working - cools the car, but when I turn the fan off the engine starts the sputtering again.

Check for vacuum leaks. Fill a spray bottle with a few drops of d/w liquid and the rest with water. Start and run the engine. Spray around all vacuum lines and areas to where hoses may be going. If the engine r.p.m. increases, that's where your vacuum leak is. Stay away from electrical.

My 99 Ody with 120K would suddenly switch off and come back while runing, Take it to dealer and report to Honda, Since out of warranty. The dealer would do the repairs estimated at $100 charge to you.

Astrostart won't start the car

You may need to reset the system.

SEQUENCE ACTIVATED BY THE PARKING BRAKE .
1. While engine is running (key in ignition switch), apply the brakes and hold the pedal down.
2. Move gearshift lever to neutral.
3. Apply the parking brake Once Twice
Note: The system can be set - at time of installation - to require that the parking brake be applied once or twice.
If set for two actuations, pause one second between the two.
4. Remove key from ignition (the system keeps the engine running).
5. Exit the vehicle.
6. Within 60 seconds, close all doors.
7. The system will stop the engine and blink the parking brakes once to confirm the sequence is valid (vehicle is
ready for a remote start command).
SEQUENCE ACTIVATED BY THE REMOTE CONTROL
1. While engine is running (key in ignition switch), apply the brakes and hold the pedal down.
2. Move gearshift lever to neutral.
3. Apply parking brake.
4. Send the start command (Model 801 & 2101 - Model 903 ).
5. Remove key from ignition (the system keeps the engine running).
6. Exit the vehicle.
7. Using the remote, send the STOP command. The system will stop the engine and parking lights will blink once
to confirm that the sequence is valid (vehicle is ready for a remote start command).

Sputtering at midrange rpm somtimes

Perhaps I'm too late and too long winded! But to answer your question about the fuel pump, yes the pump failure mode could be gradual. But as for your "sputtering" engine the root cause could be related to the fuel or ignition system. For clarification I have a few questions. (1) Realizing this may be an intermitent problem, can you make the engine sputter if you rev the engine with tranmission in park? If yes, this reduces the probability of the sputter being ignition related. (2) When you do rev the engine do you get full rpm's (> 2000rpm) or does it seem choked/limited? If no, your suspisions maybe correct and your engine could have a fuel system problem. (3) Or possibly the sputter only occurs/worsens when the engine is loaded? You can sufficiently load the engine by applying the park, service brake pedal, shifting the transmission into drive, and then slowly applying moderate accelerator pedal. It shouldn't take more than 25 to 50% of accelerator application to safely load the engine.

Two possible solutions: If the engine sputters with the transmission in park or you just don't trust the fuel pump you might want to check the fuel filter first before condeming the pump. The alcohol content in fuel could have cleared enough debris to plug your 3 month old fuel filter. You should be able to blow through the filter without much effort. When the fuel filter is clogged it will fatigue the pump and can lead to failure. It could also be poor fuel quality though. (2) If the engine sputters loaded check the ignition coils and module. One way to check a coil is to disconnect a plug wire set before trying to duplicate the problem. If the engine sputters worsens with a wire set disconnected that coil is okay. You will find the culprit when the sputter doesn't change with a plug wire set dis connected.
