Does the a c compressor need to be removed when changing the a c clutch?

The bearings went out in the a c clutch. I was able to remove the old clutch with out removing the compressor but I don't know if I will be able to put the new parts on with out removing it. I was thinking of just pressing out the bearing and putting in a new one, but the clutch coil shows some burnt spots on it. It still shows continuity through it. Would it be best just to replace the whole clutch assembly? The cars not worth much but still runs ok. Or put a shorter belt on a have no AC?

Good news...if you've got the 4 cylinder model, O'Reilly Auto Parts has a belt made by Gates Model #K060806. If you have the 6 cylinder model, it's Gates Model #K060623. I'm guessing you tried AutoZone first...I hate AZ for this reason alone. Anyways, hope this proves useful. Have a great night!

ok well sounds to me like your gonna have to remove the ac comp. itself which will take a little work... the new pully will prolly be a bracket that bolts up were the ac comp is now but it will be free spinning i have not done this specfic one but thats like one i did once you will have to empty the ac system of all refrig which to be done properly you must have a recovery machine {which means shop which means money im sorry} then remove the lines and un bolt comp. when all said and done you will notice better gas milage so thats a plus i hope this was helpfull and once again this is how i did it to my old blazer i used to have so i hope that its the same for you best of luck man

I doubt anyone knows that off the top of their head. You could run a string through the path you want the belt to take and measure how much string it takes. This will give you an approximate length for the belt -- most parts stores could find one close to that size.

Best solution to your problem is going ot the junk yard asking them for a left front knuckle. They will charge you about the same price for all this stuff as the auto parts store will charge you for a wheel bearing. After you have this knuckle you will be able to take a few things off of it and be able to put it on with only remvoing like 3-5 bolts.

How to change a/c clutch bearing

This car has 2 different compressors 1 is SANDEN and other is CV171 but both require a specail puller to remove the outer clutch hub This puller screws on to the main shaft and has a threaded nut (outer side ) that screws into hub this removes hub then remove snap ring off compressor snout and install a spacer (specail tool) this covers the main shaft not to damage thrust bearing internal of compressor and a second puller can remove pulley. Most bearings are swedge fitted so the whole pulley needs to be replaced this comes in kit with a clutch coil also it is held on with a snap ring also. there are small washers (shims) that adjust the air gap on the pulley to hub set @ .025-.045

I interpret this as the Passengers side of your car. Usually the serpentine belt breaks when the A/C compressor seizes. That is the part which is probably grinding or the A/C clutch bearing is seized.

Although this is Winter, the Defroster is made to activate the compressor to lube it during the Winter. Now the pulley that turns the compressor has a clutch bearing. It is ALWAYS turning when the engine is on except when electricity is applied to the compressor clutch and it locks and turns the A/C compressor shaft.

What needs to be done now is to determine if the A/C clutch bearing is bad or if the A/C compressor is bad. Most A/C clutch bearings can be removed and replaced. SOME of the bearings within the A/C clutch can be changed and then they are as good as new.

The procedure for replacing the bearing is 1 step beyond replacing the entire A/C clutch. The fan shroud must be removed, the serpentine belt must come off, then a small bolt and a retaining clip must be removed and the clutch slid off the compressor.

There is no need to remove the compressor or lose Freon. The bearing situation can be determined once the serpentine belt is removed and the parts turned by hand.

My air compressor pulley appears to be squelling. I took off the belt and checked the pulleys ability to spin freely and it was rough though spun with some drag. I guess this means that the pulley bearings...

You cannot lubricate this bearing, you will need to replace it. You can change this part without opening the refrigerant system. Remove the center bolt on the clutch, and it slides off. There are shim washers involved but they usually stay in the clutch. There is a snap ring behind the clutch that retains the pulley. remove the snap ring and work the pulley off.

yes it is 10 years old. the proper maintenance on a 10 year old A/C is to remove the old compressor and exchange it for a rebuilt one, then have the system recharged at a shop which does that kind of work. the whole compressor is at the end of its service life, replace the whole thing not just the clutch.

you need to discharge the ac and remove the compressor then remove the bolt on the the front for the clutch then theres a snap ring holding the bearing on wacth out for the little shims in the clutch if you lose them the clutch will be stuck on

Ac compressor clutch is making a noise is the clutch is replaceable without replacing compressor

I had the same issue with my 2006. I thought the compressor clutch bearings were faulty. After further research, the rattling noise was actually coming from the serpentine belt tensioner. Easy repair!

Buy a whole new clutch for about $200. You need a special puller to remove the old one if you intend to refurbish it. It's not worth the effort. Just remove the clips and knock the old one off with a hammer. Chuck it away and replace with a brand new clutch assembly.

AC problem

Sounds like the bearing and clutch went out. Its best to replace the compressor, unless you got the tools and knowhow to chg. the clutch and bearing. If you just chg. out the compressor, the refregerent has to be drained out first, and then unbolt lines on back of compressor, and electrical wires, and belt, and bolts then remove. Put new compressor on in reverse order. But system should be vacumed be for its recharged with refregerent.
