What happened? My key came apart and now it won't start. I'm thinking it might be the key instead of the starter because there was NO prior indication a starter was going bad.

Hi michael, a couple of things, 1st if you have a key with a chip in it (as a theft deterent) it couldvre malfunctioned, if you have a reg. key id start with the main fuse for the computer regulator and work my way to the starter relay, efi relay, neutral safety switch, and so on, hope this helps!!

ok well i check'd fuse's and some relays, it at cranked 4 a bit when i first tried start it then it went to nothing, to me it sounded like the starter, i gave it a good old whack while atempting to strart with no success. the key functions perfectly and the anti-theft light does not flash once unlocked... another thought that i have read is that the car may think it's still in drive. even though it displays the gear your in the swich may not be activating. it seems that way as every attempt to start, no matter what gear eg. R N D Park, it has the same result.?? iduno, i don't understand these new cars haha

first thing to do is remove spark plugs and if they smell really fuely you will need to change them if that doesnt help you will need to get the microtech tuned for a good coldstart , this depends on if its running stand alone or as a piggy back

SOURCE: 2002 mitsubishi galant

Has it overheated lately?
My wife overheated our Galant and it just stopped working, it cranks but that's it.
I pulled the sparkplugs and found them wrapped in a gewey jelly like substance. Like an oil/antifreeze combo.
I am going to replace the entire motor for $1000 as taking it to the mechanics to theorize and practice may cost more.

SOURCE: my 91 mitsubishi gto wont start and strong smell of fuel

Start by making sure you have spark to the spark plugs. If not you may have a problem with the plug wires or coil. It's also possible you're not getting gas to the engine possibly from a faulty fuel pump.
If you change the fuel pump be sure to replace the fuel filter also.

My 2004 Mitsubishi Outlander turns over and cranks but will not start. The engine light comes on but I don't know how to check the code or if there's any codes to find out what the problem is

It is not starting most likely due to lack/no fuel or no spark. You will have to determine if there is a fuel supply. Can you hear the fuel pump come on if you remove the gas cap and put your ear close while turning the key to the on position? If you can't hear it operate for a second or two, it may not be working. Pull a spark plug wire off the spark plug and hold it over the engine and crank the motor. If a continuos spark is present the ignition system is ok.

Engine cranks but won't start.

Measure or have a reliable mechanic measure fuel rail pressure. I still say the problem is in the fuel delivery system.

My mitsubishi out lander cranks but does not start.what are the possible causes?

You may have a security issue with your key not being recognized by your vehicle, or possibly a weak fuel pump. It would be best to have it diagnosed at a shop.

I have a 2005 mitsubishi outlander. It wont start after I ran out of gas. I bought a new battery but the car still wont start

It's still out of gas until the lines are purged of air. The fuel pump has to run awhile to build up pressure. Keep cranking. If you can take the small gauge wire off the starter easily, all you have to do is turn the key to the start position and hold it there for a while. Listen for the fuel pump. When it slows down or stops then reconnect the wire and it should start.

2003 mitsubishi outlander died at stop light. wont start. turns over and has a full tank of gas. is getting fuel to engine.

very poss it could be crank sensor ,broken wire ? timing belt? advise installing scan tool that reads live data check eng rpm on scan tool see if shows eng rpm while cranking , poss remove upper timing belt cover make sure is turning and not damaged, poss computer related problem or power to eng systems would have to check for power at fuel injs and check for ground pulse with logic probe or led test light if crank sensor ok also check for spark at plugs with special plug tester and check codes first

Car wont turn over when started

When you turn the key to full electrical power (right before you'd crank it), do you hear a hum from behind you? It'd be the fuel pump, and it should run for a few seconds. If it does, and you have no cranking when you turn the key, check the starter relay - if it's shot, it won't allow power to the starter, and the car won't crank. If you don't hear the hum, check fuses and relays for the fuel pump first, and if they're OK, you may have a dead fuel pump.
