While driving in stop-go traffic, my Drive gear light began blinking. I was able to continue to drive to my destination. I placed gear shift in Reverse, Neutral, and lower gears while the D continued to blink.
This light is warning you that a fault has been detected in the electronically controlled transmission by the Transmission control module. You must get the system scanned for the fault code that was set in the modules memory when the light was turned on.

Blinking light means there is a trouble code.There is a procedure to manually pull codes from the computer.Have the codes checked,have them written down.It could be just shift solenoids,or could even be something more serious,but thats the starting point.

Sounds like the car is just slipping out of gear. Keep your hand on the shifter when you back up next time. See if you can feel the shifter move when the car comes out of gear. If the shifter moves up when it happens keep pressure on the shifter holding it back like you dont want it to move forward. And of course if the shifter moves back when it comes out of gear, put forward pressure on the shifter so it doesnt slip out. This might work for now but but i know i wouldnt want to spen 700 for that ****. Let me know how it goes.

Blinking D4 can also mean electical problem. In my case it was ignition switch's life comming to the end. If my ignition switch was finaly dead and I replaced it with a new one D4 was not blinking anymore. If you have problems with ignition switch, for example it will not start engine at first time try to replace it before it will break on the road in least expected moment. I have '95 odyssey. The ignition switch is faulty in time, it was subject of honda factory recall.

I have a 1998 Civic HX 2DR as well and mine also takes a moment to engage when you press the gas. I don't know if this is normal or not? I just bought the car and I need to replace the trans fluid only because I don’t know if there is Honda oil or another brand in it. The CVT transmissions only can use Honda's CVT oil. There is a recommend alternative oil but based on the manual it’s only for temporary use until you can replace it with the Honda oil otherwise it will cause damage to the transmission over time.
