Shifting into and out of 2nd is fine, but once you get into 2nd gear I'm hearing a continuous "metal ticking" on every tire rotation? I recently purchased this Jeep a couple of months ago, and of course this had to happen now that I have it. This Jeep does have 174K miles on it, and drives great except for this problem. I've basically quite using 2nd gear since I first heard the sound...until I can get it to a Jeep specialty shop. Any guidance or wisdom? Thanks
Ticking/knocking in a particular gear ( except 4th which is technically not a gear) indicates a chipped tooth on one of the gears (lay shaft or main shaft) and will, if left not repaired ,will introduce metal bits into the bearings and cause real problems
better to take it to an accredited transmission specialist shop as the first response from a jeep shop will be "new transmission"
It is repairable with a replacement gear if on the main shaft or a replacement cluster shaft if on that shaft but will depend on transferred damage if one has damaged the other as well
consider a full bearing and seal replacement when the box is down
First thing to do is ensure all the transmission oil levels are correct. It is a good idea to draw a little oil into a sight glass to check the condition.
Check the condition and security of of the propshafts and universal joints and a thorough wheelfree inspection of the underside.
It is perhaps worth noting the gearbox rotates considerably faster than road speed. A road speed ticking is unlikely to be directly related to the gearbox.
The only things that do rotate at road or wheel speed are the wheels and things connected directly to them - brake rotors, drive shafts/half shafts, differentials...

possible throttle position sensor ,. air intake leaks , ignition coil or secondary ignition cable , important to have good clean ground and battery connections also

Try to check the trans mission gears of your 1995 jeep grand cherokee. The shift fork and the clutch sleeve of the trans mission is locking to the other gears .And then also check the starter motor and its solenoid.if the starter motor solenoid is destroyed or worn out replace .

only on right turns?? a smaller tire would have resulted in damage if the rear is a locking type rearend. IF it is a locking rear end I would change the oil, noting the color and how it looks. replace it and add some "slip additive"............. IF its not a locking type axle, maybe a spider gear problem, but thats inside the housing, not out by the wheel. You may need to take the axle out and inspect the axle/ bearing.
SOURCE: my transmission is shifting late. it will not
On the side of the transmission you will see the selector shaft for the shifter cable and a smaller arm that goes to the throttle valve. It is most likely seized keeping the transmission in passing gear. A little penetrating oil and move it back and forth untill it frees up.
SOURCE: Hi My jeep cherokee 2.8 crd has knocking sound
Well, something is broken. I suggest that you get it on a lift, and listen with a Stethoscope and be sure the noise is in the tranny. There is not usually anything good that comes from a noise like you describe. A broken tooth on a gear damages the mating gear and those parts add up fast.
