Holden Barina 1996 Car is overheating in minutes, thermostat and heater tap have recently been replaced, coolant level is full, fan fuse is ok what could be the problem?

It is usually in the fuse panel under the hood 'Cooling Fan" or 'Fan Relay" It is not uncommon for those motors to burn out. If possible disconnect the electrical connector going to the fan motor. start the engine turn on the A/C you should get 12V at the car side of the plug. Or your 12V test light will come on. Bad motor.

IF CAR OVERHEATING WHILE IDLING YOUR COOLING FANS NOT WORKING CHECK COOLING FANS FUSE AND RELAYS.IF FUSE AND RELAYS OKAY THE ENGINECOOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR BAD.

Costs nothing to try this, just in case coolant level was low when or after bottle changed, and you got an airlock. Start car when cold, rad cap off and heater on. Now let in run until it comes up to normal operating temperatures and rad fan(s) kick on and off, 2 or 3 times, and add coolant to proper level in rad if it goes down during process. Then after that, put rad cap back on, fill coolant return bottle to proper level and try it. Quite often when re-filling an engine cooling system, people forget to turn on heater to get coolant circulating through the heater core.

WHEN CAR STARTING OVERHEATING MAKE SURE COOLANT LEVEL DIDNT GET TOO LOW. IF NOT I WOULD REPLACE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP IF OVERHEATING WHILE SITTING IDLING COOLING FAN NOT COMING ON.CHECK COOLING FAN FUSE AND RELAY IF ALL IS GOOD.CHECK COOLING BY HOTWIRING IT.IF RUNS YOU HAVE A BAD COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR OR FAULT IN WIRE CIRCUIT.IF FAN DONT RUN WHEN HOTWIRED REPLACE FAN MOTOR.IF CAR STILL KEEP OVERHEATING CHECK ENGINE OIL LOOKS LIKE MILK BLOWN HEAD GASKET.IF OIL LOOKS OKAY YOU NEED RADIATOR AND ENGINE FLUSHED OUT.

When the car is completely cool,check the electric fan(s) for smooth rotation.

Clean/check/change the thermo sensor,contact and wire.

Excavate air pocket in coolant system / check for head gasket leak

This test will kill two birds with one stone.

MAKE SURE THE COOLANT SYSTEM and ENGINE IS COLD!

RAN THIS TEST IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA ONLY!

You will spill some coolant during this air pocket purge test.......BE KIND TO THE ENVIRONMENT and ANIMAL please clean up after the test!

Put the front end on a pair of ramp or park your car on a VERY STEEP HILL (radiator facing top of the hill) .

Top of the coolant reserve tank

Let it ran for 10-15 minutes.

Monitor for air pockets escaping from coolant reserve tank.

Small amount of bubbles is OK at 1-5 minute mark

After the thermostat open up (after 195 F warm up) at
5-12 minute mark or after high idle you should see less bubbles.

If you do not see any in rush of bubbles then your thermostat may be partially stuck or rusted badly inside the thermostat hosing.

Give the thermostat host few gentle taps.

If you see larger bubbles surfacing after 15 minutes then should do a hydrocarbon (HC) dye test to test for potential head gasket leak.

Let engine cold down and top off coolant reserve tank.

Start monitor for coolant lost

A coolant flush is require every 2 years or 24,000 miles.

I recommend the thermostat that has a relief pop-let to reduce the change of burst radiator and coolant hoses.

Make sure you get a new thermostat gasket,black RTV and fresh coolant for the job.

replace that thermostat again...flush radiator any way...then see how it runs...

remove fan and fan shroud. caution, left hand threads on the fan. follow top rad hose to the thermostat housing which is bolted to the cyl. head. remove thermostat housing and replace thermostat and gasket. note the arrow on the thermostat, it should point up. reinstall thermostat housing. fill coolant reservoir, but do not close the cap. start the vehicle and have an assistant run the engine at 3 000 rpm while you top up coolant.have the heater set on hottest. make sure the coolant is circulating into the reservoir. when you have good circulation and the coolant level is not dropping anymore you can close the cap. make sure you have good heat coming out of the vents. if there is no heat, you have an air lock. immediately shut the car off to prevent overheating. make sure to check coolant level once the engine is completely cold.
