Holden Barina 1996 Car is overheating in minutes, thermostat and heater tap have recently been replaced, coolant level is full, fan fuse is ok what could be the problem?

    Hi

    Thanx for your helpful advice onyeredson, I too suspected an air block in the radiator but discounted it when the filler tank was full. In answer to djishere's question the thermostat was replaced over 8 months ago and I thought unrelated. The car has had previous electrical issues and I was told that it may be the fan not switching on??? I'm just guessing here and onyeredson's solution seems to make sense. I'm a bit curious as to why the problem arose the very next day after work was done on the heater tap????

    I've got honda civic lxi '97, it got overheat last wednesday.They replaced the fan but last fri, it was hot again. Last saturday, they cleaned the aircon and did other mechanical stuff. But when I took it home from the shop, the car is shaking everytime I change gears. Yesterday, it was cold for few minutes but the aircon doesnt blow cold air this morning and as if the car has difficulty running. Even if I step on the accelerator, it is still slow.

Hi! Was the thermostat and other items replaced due to this overheating? you say coolant level full? maybe your header tank is full but the system isn't? Try bleeding the system. From cold, start the engine with radiator/header tank cap OFF stay with the vehicle and have some very warm water handy. DON'T look over the filler but watch it as the car gets to operating temperature if the water drops drastically top it up with warm water again stay with the car it may take a long time to level out. If the car is bubbling furiously and doesn't want to settle then possible HEAD GASKET Failure or Water pump.
Does your oil look milky on the dipstick? is there an excessive amount of water coming out of the exhaust? are your hoses swelling with radiator/header tank cap on at operating temp?
Sorry to be the possible bearer of bad tiding if the Gasket has gone, but better to sort it now than cause irreprable damage?

    Hello again Melissa, great news that the oil isn't contaminated. I still think an air lock could be the cause as the heater Matrix will have been completely emptied when you has the tap? replaced.

    As for the fans not kicking in it would take a darn good while before she boils over if vehicle is stationary on tickover.

    Please let me know any more if you can after bleeding the system,

    Cheer's

I also have an XK8 that had overheating problems. After replacing the therostat and the problem remained, I removed the water pump and inspected it. It turns out Jaguar used plastic impellers in their water pumps that often fail. I replaced it with an aftermarket pump with a metal impeller and problem solved. wjhxk8

How do i locate the thermatic fan relay or fuse. 2002 holden barina

It is usually in the fuse panel under the hood 'Cooling Fan" or 'Fan Relay" It is not uncommon for those motors to burn out. If possible disconnect the electrical connector going to the fan motor. start the engine turn on the A/C you should get 12V at the car side of the plug. Or your 12V test light will come on. Bad motor.

1996 Legacy Overheating It has coolant and both fans are working. Overheats after about 10 min of driving. Checked oil was a little low put 1 liter in. Radiator has pressure, opened when hot and coolant...

Costs nothing to try this, just in case coolant level was low when or after bottle changed, and you got an airlock. Start car when cold, rad cap off and heater on. Now let in run until it comes up to normal operating temperatures and rad fan(s) kick on and off, 2 or 3 times, and add coolant to proper level in rad if it goes down during process. Then after that, put rad cap back on, fill coolant return bottle to proper level and try it. Quite often when re-filling an engine cooling system, people forget to turn on heater to get coolant circulating through the heater core.

WHEN CAR STARTING OVERHEATING MAKE SURE COOLANT LEVEL DIDNT GET TOO LOW. IF NOT I WOULD REPLACE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP IF OVERHEATING WHILE SITTING IDLING COOLING FAN NOT COMING ON.CHECK COOLING FAN FUSE AND RELAY IF ALL IS GOOD.CHECK COOLING BY HOTWIRING IT.IF RUNS YOU HAVE A BAD COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR OR FAULT IN WIRE CIRCUIT.IF FAN DONT RUN WHEN HOTWIRED REPLACE FAN MOTOR.IF CAR STILL KEEP OVERHEATING CHECK ENGINE OIL LOOKS LIKE MILK BLOWN HEAD GASKET.IF OIL LOOKS OKAY YOU NEED RADIATOR AND ENGINE FLUSHED OUT.

Overheating , heater not working

When the car is completely cool,check the electric fan(s) for smooth rotation.

Clean/check/change the thermo sensor,contact and wire.

===

Excavate air pocket in coolant system / check for head gasket leak

This test will kill two birds with one stone.

===

MAKE SURE THE COOLANT SYSTEM and ENGINE IS COLD!

RAN THIS TEST IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA ONLY!

You will spill some coolant during this air pocket purge test.......BE KIND TO THE ENVIRONMENT and ANIMAL please clean up after the test!

===

Put the front end on a pair of ramp or park your car on a VERY STEEP HILL (radiator facing top of the hill) .

Top of the coolant reserve tank

Let it ran for 10-15 minutes.

Monitor for air pockets escaping from coolant reserve tank.

Small amount of bubbles is OK at 1-5 minute mark

After the thermostat open up (after 195 F warm up) at
5-12 minute mark or after high idle you should see less bubbles.

If you do not see any in rush of bubbles then your thermostat may be partially stuck or rusted badly inside the thermostat hosing.

Give the thermostat host few gentle taps.

If you see larger bubbles surfacing after 15 minutes then should do a hydrocarbon (HC) dye test to test for potential head gasket leak.

Let engine cold down and top off coolant reserve tank.

Start monitor for coolant lost

===

A coolant flush is require every 2 years or 24,000 miles.

I recommend the thermostat that has a relief pop-let to reduce the change of burst radiator and coolant hoses.

Make sure you get a new thermostat gasket,black RTV and fresh coolant for the job.

Need help

remove fan and fan shroud. caution, left hand threads on the fan. follow top rad hose to the thermostat housing which is bolted to the cyl. head. remove thermostat housing and replace thermostat and gasket. note the arrow on the thermostat, it should point up. reinstall thermostat housing. fill coolant reservoir, but do not close the cap. start the vehicle and have an assistant run the engine at 3 000 rpm while you top up coolant.have the heater set on hottest. make sure the coolant is circulating into the reservoir. when you have good circulation and the coolant level is not dropping anymore you can close the cap. make sure you have good heat coming out of the vents. if there is no heat, you have an air lock. immediately shut the car off to prevent overheating. make sure to check coolant level once the engine is completely cold.
