Light knowed as Emission Control? Its possible that you are talking about Check Engine light, that generally is refer at emission problem. When the light comes on, one or more diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) are stored in the engine control module. These DTCs remain even if the light goes out.

To address a Check Engine Light problem, the DTCs are retrieved and the appropriate troubleshooting information is followed in order to determine the problem.

The four most common Check Engine Light scenarios and what to do:
* The Check Engine Light turns on and off or flickers.
If the Check Engine Light comes on in the city but goes off on the freeway, then the fault is present during city driving conditions. Pay attention to whether or not the vehicle runs or drives any differently when the Check Engine Light illuminates. If vehicle performance does change, drive the car as little as possible and take it to be checked by a service professional as soon as possible. If there is no change in vehicle performance, you can drive home, but have it inspected as soon as possible. In this condition, you run a risk of the vehicle dying or not starting.

* The Check Engine Light comes on and stays on.
If the Check Engine Light illuminates constantly during driving with no noticeable driving or performance problems, there is a permanent fault in the emission control system. When this happens, the computer that controls the emission system usually has a backup program that runs while the fault is present. (These backup programs are often referred to as "limp home" mode programs.) You should get the vehicle serviced as soon as possible, but in most cases, the vehicle will continue to operate, though you run a risk of it dying or not starting.

* The Check Engine Light illuminates, stays on, and there are performance problems.
This means that a vital component of your emission control and engine management system has a serious problem. It usually involves a component or system needed for the vehicle to run at all. In most cases, drive the vehicle as little as possible. In many cases, the vehicle is not safe to drive at all -it could stop or stall out at any moment. It is best to pull over to a safe place and have the vehicle towed to an automotive diagnostician for a thorough inspection and repair.

* The Check Engine Light light comes on and blinks in a steady pattern while driving.
Don't confuse this steady pulsing of the Check Engine Light light (usually one or more flashes per second) with a flicker (see above). The Check Engine Light may stay on steadily or it may flash when the vehicle is accelerated. This is very serious. There is a severe failure of the emission control system that is causing the engine to misfire to the point that the catalytic converter is damaged each time the Check Engine Light flashes. It may mean that the catalytic converter is overheating to the point that it will glow red or, in extreme cases, start a fire on the underside of the vehicle. Immediately pull over to a safe place and have your vehicle towed to an automotive diagnostician for repair. Vehicles can be severely damaged and even destroyed by fire if this condition is ignored for too long.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

Thanks alot for the helpful solutions you provided. I bought my Mercedes S 550 from US and shipped it to Middle East. I am having the check engine light on and stays on constantly with no noticeable change in the performance (as your second scenario). I have checked with many service professionals here in my country and all of them saying that there is no problem in my car and having the check engine light on is normal. One of them suggested that I can go on highways and push the acceleration pedals to the most for many time in order to let the carbon-dioxide away from the exhaust system (which causing the check engine light as per him). I am still trying this method but with no benefit till now. Would you suggest such a solution or do you have other methods? keeping in mind that no service professional has been able to solve it for me. Appreciate your response. Thanks

Every time I put gas in my car, I have to keep it running. If I turn my car off and put gas in it, my car will not start right up. I will have to press the brake and gas at the same time a few times to...

Common problem. Your engine is "flooding" (too much fuel). When the Evaporative Emissions Purge Control Valve (also known as purge control solenoid) sticks open, it allows the fuel vapor from the tank to be forced into the intake manifold on the engine when the vapor in the tank is displaced by the new fuel entering the fuel tank. This will cause the engine to start very hard (long crank) and when it does start, it will stumble and misfire for several seconds until the excessive fuel vapor has been cleared out.

If you scan your onboard Computer you will most likely get a code
P0441 "Evaporative Emission System Incorrect Purge Flow"

Your check engine light is most likely on. If it is not, it SHOULD be.

You may also get other codes such as P0455 "Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (large leak)" or a P0457 "Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (fuel cap loose/off)". If you do find these codes are present, I wouldn't worry too much about those because they can be caused by refueling your vehicle with the engine running. Simply clear all codes after replacing your purge control valve and everything should be OK.

Anyway, the purge control valve is located in the engine compartment and is not very hard to replace.

NOTE: DO NOT confuse the purge control valve with the canister vent control valve that is located at the REAR of the vehicle. I have seen many techs that do not know how these systems work that will replace the wrong valve and the customer is the one who ends up paying for it.

Yellow light on dash, emissions workshop warning

Volkswagen vehicles built after 1996 are equippedwith a system of sensors known as On Board Diagnostics (OBD II). These sensorsmonitor many vital engine functions and help to lower harmful emissions. Whenone of these sensors fails it sends a signal to the engine computer to illuminate the "CheckEngine" light in the dash. To clear this light you will need a diagnosticcode scanner. Scanners range in price from $40 to $120 and are available atmost auto parts stores.

1. Connect the diagnostic code scanner to the vehicle's diagnostic port. Theport will be located in the dash below the heater controls.. 2. Turn the key to the"Run" position, but do not start the engine. 3. Press the button on thescanner that reads "Scan for trouble codes." 4. Wait for the scanner to finishscanning the engine's computer. 5. Press the button on thescanner labeled "Clear all trouble codes." 6. Disconnect the diagnostic codescanner from the vehicle.
