Is there an access panel for the fuel pump or do you drop the tank?
SOURCE: Fuel pump on 64 Impala is pumping but no gas from tank.
Ground wire in the tank won't do you any good,You can hook a low pressure air line to the fuel line under the hood and blow the clog back into the tank and then run an inline filter as close to the tank as possible. That way the filter will catch the clog and you can just replace the filter when that happens.
Please rate this a fixya

You will have to drop the tank. Soak the bolts on the straps with a penetrating fluid before you start.

My 2002 Impala has the panel in the trunk. I took the panel off and the fuel pump is accessible. I will probably attempt to replace the fuel pump myself since the fuel gauge does not work anymore and the dealership indicated that the problem was the fuel level float connected to the fuel pump.
Does anyone know if there is anything special I need to do prior to replacing the fuel pump, such as draining the fuel, etc...? I was planning to at least run the car until I was near empty.
FYI, here is a link to a set of videos about replacing fuel pumps. It's a set of 13 short video clips. http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to/video/how-to-repair-or-replace-a-fuel-pump-226058/

NOTE
The fuel pump strainer must be in a horizontal position when the fuel sender is installed in the tank. When installing the sender assembly, make sure that the fuel pump strainer does not block full travel of the float arm.
