2001 Toyota Sequoia power-folding rear view mirrors

The driver side mirror electric motor for folding the mirror will not shut off. I was driving around, and stopped at Home Depot for a while, came out started the vehicle and the motor for the mirror was running none stop. I had to fold them in to stop it from running. I couldn't figure out what fuse is for the outside power mirrors or how to access (with out damaging somthing) the mirrors motor or wiring to trouble shoot it.
Any help would be appreciated.

  • disieno Dec 05, 2008

Where can I find the information on how to remove and replace the mirror? Also what relay/fuse is it for the power mirrors?
The answer I recieved was kind of a no brainer,

The motor itself is not replaceable. You have to replace the whole mirror assembly.
Side Mirrors
Electric, cable operated, or manual? In any case remove the driver side door panel, on the inside of the car in the fender side corner where the mirror mounts, you will either have a small phillips screw holding the mirror backin on, or it may have plastic tabs, and can be gently popped off using a flat blade screwdriver. Once the door panel, and inside mirror mount cover are removed, you should see three 10mm nuts, arranged in a triangular pattern behind the inside mirror cover. If the mirror is electric, after removing the three 10mm nuts and slowing pulling the mirror off on the outside, you will see the wiring connector for the mirror, unsnap the tab and remove the mirror. On a note occasionally it may be easier to undo the mirror if the window glass is all the way down. If the mirror is manual, just remove the three 10mm nuts and remove the mirror. If it is a cable operated mirror, with the "joystick" to adjust it on the inside, once the three 10mm nuts are removed, on the inside portion of the inside back of the mirror, the "joystick" is held to the back cover by a small metric allen screw, with the right sized allen loosen this screw, but not all the way out. After it's loosened sufficiently the "joystick" assembly should slide right out of the cavity it's in. Be careful when removing mirrors, often times there is a rubber grommet that any wiring or "joystick" slips through.
to open the door
Tools: small pocket size screwdriver, long screwdriver, phillips head screwdriver.
First, remove the small screw cover behind the door handle then remove the screw next, remove the screw cover and screw near the hinge on the top portion of panel then, remove the screw cover and screw under the arm rest/handle, next there are two plastic pop rivets on the latch side of the panel that must be popped out, finally using a long screwdriver pry under the panel on the sides and bottom to release the plastic pop rivets that are hidden inside. After all of these are removed push the panel up toward the window as is is hanging from the top.
To replace, make sure all plastic pop rivets are attached to the door panel, if not remove them from the door and attach them to the panel. Rehang the panel and align the door handle and make certain the wires are all behind the panel then smack the panel with your hand where the plastic rivets are located then replace all screws and screw covers.
also
I discovered that the only way to stop is was to hold the button halfway down that folds the mirrors inward. I used a toothpick as a wedge to keep the button in the halfway down position. I have scheduled an appointment to have the mirror control button assembly replaced. The cost of the part alone is about $150.00.

Power for the Remote Control mirrors runs thru the 15 amp CIG fuse, under the dash. Remove the fuse, the mirror should stop working. This will also eliminate the power to your aux power points.

Please feel free to respond back, I can send you a PDF of the entire mirror wiring diagram to assist you with your diagnosis.

  • Anonymous Dec 05, 2008

BTW, looking at the wiring diagram, I do NOT see ANY relays for the mirror system. Please do not bother to look for something that does not exist, as advised by another "expert".

  • Anonymous Dec 05, 2008

A complete and concise solution is as follows, as opposed to the other solutions given:

Power runs thru the 15 amp Cig fuse to the mirror control assembly, that is def not a joystick.

The power wire to the controller is Pink. The retraction switch sends power down the Yellow wire to the mirrors; inside the mirrors there are 3 motors (2 for the mirrors, the other for the retraction feature), 2 diodes, a resistor, and 2 switches, one normally open, the other normally closed.

The Mirror Return wire is Green. Identifying where the power is with a testlamp will easily solve this problem.

The Green Wire did it!!!! Thank you Toyota Ed :) I unplugged the driver mirror, pull out the green wire, and now the folding motor is shut off. The passenger side mirror still folds, and I can fold the driver side mirror manually. You saved me a lot of money!

Why hasn't anyone suggested that the mirrir control switch may be defective, the contacts may be burnt or stuck, so the mirror is not the issue, this mirror is over $100, the switch maybe $20, try the switch 1st.

Any one had issues with replacing a 2007 Chevy tahoe power folding mirrors?

so did not scan the PCM to learn why it fails?
we never ever skip scans today modern cars MUST be scanned first
after fuses all good (endless posted here same words )

outside mirror electrics seen in the service manual
I am reading it now
left side front fails
the mirror runs off the DDS, model, driver door switch controls
so mirror left//right up down work but the fold motor is dead

well the DDS is bad or the wires to it are bad
or comms fail. not scanning the PCm/BCM means not seeing errors.
the DDS has 4 switches
2 for extend and retract
and 2 to drive the motor, so 4 wires there. can fail.

I say DDS is bad. or connectors rusty or wiring damage there.

How to disconnect the motor on a driver's side mirror

It is the switch in the mirror motor and it seems to be happening to everyone who owns a Sequoia. The fix is expensive so I figured out if I physically hold both mirrors in place while hitting the console switch to fold the mirrors inward that the mirrors would stay in place and the running motor would shut off.

Power windows an locks work ok ? Do you know anything about automotive electeronic control modules ?
Power Mirror System
Power Mirror System Components
The power mirror system consists of the following components:
• Driver Door Switch (DDS)--An electronic control module with integrated switches and requires programming when replaced
• Passenger Door Switch (PDS)--An electronic control module with integrated switches, requires programming when replaced
• Power Mirror Direction Switch--Integrated into DDS and is a 4 position momentary switch that provides a signal input to the DDS for up, down, left/extend and right/retract with a mirror switch activation
• Mirror Select Switch--Integrated into DDS and is a 3 position switch that allows the operator to select the left or right mirror and also a neutral/fold position
• Left Outside Power Mirror--Contains both the vertical and horizontal mirror motors
• Right Outside Power Mirror--Contains both the vertical and horizontal mirror motors
• Body Control Module--An electronic control module that requires programming when replaced, serves as the power mode master and is the main message handler
• Memory Switch, if equipped with memory mirrors--Supplied power by the DDS and provides a voltage signal to the DDS upon a switch activation
• Horizontal and Vertical Position Sensors, if equipped with memory mirrors--Supplied a 5-volt and low reference by the DDS/PDS and provide a variable voltage signal to the DDS/PDS that is proportional to mirror position
• Powertrain Control Module (PCM), if equipped with memory mirrors--An electronic control module that requires programming when replaced and provides the message indicating transmission gear selection
• Driver Information Center (DIC), if equipped with memory mirrors--Part of the instrument cluster which is a an electronic control module that requires programming when replaced and is used to personalize the memory recall functions
• Fold Motor, in each of the outside mirrors, if equipped with power fold mirrors--Provides extend and retract movements of the mirror and is serviced as a complete mirror assembly
Each of the outside power mirrors contains 2 reversible motors to provide horizontal and vertical movement of the mirror glass. The vertical motor operates the up and down directions and the horizontal motor operates the left and right directions. If equipped with power folding mirrors, each outside power mirror will contain a reversible fold motor to operate the extend and retract functions. Each of the mirror motors are circuit breaker protected.

Do you know what DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes are ?
DTC B1023
Circuit/System Description
The driver door switch (DDS) and front passenger door switch (PDS) each contain switches that control power door lock and window functions. The DDS also contains the control switch for the power outside rear view mirrors. These switches are integrated within the door control modules and are not serviceable as separate components. The DDS and PDS monitor these switch inputs for internal faults and set B1023 00 if any are detected.

You could have any number of problems an without testing , hooking up a scanner that can check DTC'S in the door module ,electrical circuit testing etc... we'd only be guessing . Your best bet mite be to take it to a qualified repair shop.
