OBD works with dealer computer, fails with Registry computer

I fail my MA state inspection because the OBD works with the station and dealer computers, giving me a clear emissions check, but when they plug in the State Registry computer it fails on emissions. The only service light currently on is for the tire pressure monitoring system and I have been told that should not affect the inspection, especially the emissions test. Neither Minuteman (Bedford) nor Tracey (Hyannis) know what is happening.

    To: vagman54.

Thx for responding. To clarify - are you suggesting that the Registry computer(s) is (are) not calibrated properly (kwp 1281) for the Touareg ? (It was my impression that the Registry units were standardized and locked to avoid fraud.)

Thanks again, I will pass this on to the tech.

vagman54, thx again. I notice you are in UK and so may not be familiar with US emission test procedure. In Massachusetts, two computers are involved, the first is a regular code-reading computer (my OBD unit communicates with that computer at all four locations that I have taken the car to).  The second is a state auto registry sanctioned machine that tests the emissions (this computer is on-site but not adjustable by the dealer) and my OBD fails to communicate properly with this unit at all four locations. Thus, the problem is almost certainly in my OBD unit but none of the techs has ever seen this situation.
    Thx again; rew5

your testing station computer is not talking the same as the other two computers it needes to be talking in kwp 1281 i believe,so there computer will shoe different readings !!!!

SOURCE: Jetta failing smog due to non communication with OBD - Suggestions?

the no data error can be contributed to a bad interface cable or the scaqn tool was configured wrong and therfore could not connect to the ecm. I would recommend having a scan done again by a certiefied volkswagon tech chances are the mechanics used the wrong adapter cable or reader card. your smog problem could be that your evap canister is clogged therfore gives a bad reading.unfortunately you have to have a scan done but try an independant small shop that delas exclusively with foreign cars such as porche andd mercedez. the will have the correct scan tool and will be much cheaper than a dealership. your cost should be no more than 50 dollars US ... please rate this. thanks

SOURCE: Car failed inspection because of the check engine light

to ideas come to mind, maybe a bad bulb in the dash (you can take this out (depending on mechanical knowledge)

or find a smaller inspections shop and try taking the car in again in hopes of that they won't catch it

SOURCE: Emissions warning light came on. Car runs great

It may be the computer itself. If the light keeps returning, either the computer is faulty or the fans are really failing. I do not recommend dealers but actual mechanic shops.

SOURCE: My 2002 VW Jetta failed smog due to MIL/Check

if this vehicle is driven in the city almost exclusively, take it out on the freeway a good 30-40 miles prior to taking it back to the smog shop. that should prime all the readiness sensors. make sure your doing some speed and not just going 55 in the slow lane. get the system nice and hot.

Why do i get OBD/READINESS, Not ready?

Alan, I f you have had battery disconnected or had some one erase codes recently, the computer has to go through what is known as a drive cycle to complete all monitors cycling, some vehicles complete cycle in 10 miles, where as some could take 100 miles or more.
My Toyota EVAP readiness state will not cycle in cold weather and takes thousands of miles before it gets to readiness state.
I think some shops can force systems to run if they have a good scan tool.

My 2001 dodge intrepid failed emissions says due o excessive of readiness monitors 'Not Ready'

you must not clear codes or unhook battery after doing what they call a drive cycle which resets monitors to a ready state. http://www.lhforums.net/forums/showthread.php?2755-OBD-II-and-your-Next-State-Inspection

2006 hyundai elantra obd won't communicate with smog check station

Just to clear things up, having the monitors ready has nothing do to with OBD Communications. Ready or not, it will communicate. The original issue here was a station with a bad scanner. she did the right thing trying somewhere else and following up to get her $ back.

OBD II system not communicating with state inspection machine or scan tool! 2002 kia Sedona

Turn you ignition switch to the on position ,does the CK ENG Lite appear, if yes this is a good indication. Your DLC (diagnostic link connector) should have battery voltage at pin 16 and ground at 4 and 5,If you can verify that your vehicle has this working order then its there problem and not yours

Did not pass state inspection (vehicle)

First the fault codes,
U110C is No Fuel Level Bus Message
U0155 is No Cluster Bus Message.
Unfortunatly you have to be able to communicate with the instrument cluster with your scanner to diagnoise and I do not think an aftermarket scanner can do this.

Emmision test failed?

It is possible that the scan tool that the shops are using, is powered independently from the OBD11 connector, but the testing station relies on the connector for power and if the fuse for it is blown, they get no data and you fail.
I've attached a picture of the connector and where you should see 12 volts. Get a test light and check this pin, if you have no power between this pin and ground, you either have a blown fuse or a wiring problem5243d31.jpg
