My 1978 ford thunderbird shut ooff while driving down the street

While trying to restart the the engine sounds strong, there is fuel in the bottom of the card. the gas gage show 1/4 tank of fuel however the locking gas cap was just sitting on the filler tube.i tested the coil and the primary resistance is high-secondary is low.i don't know how to test the ignition module.

SOURCE: ignition coil for 1993 civic

best way to test is connect to car and see if it gives spark with engine turning, because it gets ground pulse from the distributer,if pulse id not coming to ignition coil, then you need to change distributor.

SOURCE: 1992 chevy corsica runs rough, stall or dies after stopping

Sounds the EGR valve and EVP sen is bad even if you tested it. The EGR valve cntrols idle and if carbon up will make the car stall or idle high and low (rpms going up and down) This was common on all cars during that time. I would say replace the EGR valve and senosr. This should take care of the problem. One more thing have the fuel pressure check on the car.

SOURCE: FORD F150 4.6 L Engine

Several thnigs to check there; review all informastion disponible to do it and solve this...

P0356
- Ignition Coil F Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction
The ignition signal from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or Electronic Control Module(ECM) is sent to and amplified by the power transistor. The power transistor turns ON and OFF the ignition coil primary circuit. This ON/OFF operation induces the proper high voltage in the coil secondary circuit.

Symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Lack/Loss of Power
- The engine may be harder to start
- Engine hesitation

Possible Causes:
- Open or short in the ignition coil circuit
- Ignition coil circuit shorted to ground
- Ignition coil connector
- Damaged ignition coil
- Damaged PCM or ECM

Possible Solution:
- If damage, repair ignition coil circuit
- Replaced ignition coil
- Replaced PCM or ECM
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

P0152 - O2 Sensor Circuit High Voltage (Bank 2 Sensor 1)
The heated oxygen sensor 1 is placed into the exhaust manifold. It detects the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gas compared to the outside air. The heated oxygen sensor 1 has a closed-end tube made of ceramic zirconia. The zirconia generates voltage from approximately 1V in richer conditions to 0V in leaner conditions. The heated oxygen sensor 1 signal is sent to the ECM. The ECM adjusts the injection pulse duration to achieve the ideal air-fuel ratio. The ideal air-fuel ratio occurs near the radical change from 1V to 0V.

Symptoms:
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- High Fuel Consumption
- Excessive Smoke from Exhaust

Possible Causes:
- Harness or connectors (The heated oxygen sensor 1 heater circuit is open or shorted.)
- Front Heater oxygen sensor heater (Bank 2) may be faulty

Possible Solution:
Replacing the O2 Sensor 1 usually takes care of the problem
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

P0174 - Fuel Injection System Too Lean Bank 2
With the Air/Fuel Mixture Ratio Self-Learning Control, the actual mixture ratio can be brought closely to the theoretical mixture ratio based on the mixture ratio feedback signal from the heated oxygen sensors 1. The ECM calculates the necessary compensation to correct the offset between the actual and the theoretical ratios.

In case the amount of the compensation value is extremely large (The actual mixture ratio is too lean.), the ECM judges the condition as the fuel injection system malfunction and light up the MIL (2 trip detection logic).

Symptoms:
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Excessive Fuel Consumption

Possible Causes:
- Intake air leaks
- Front Heated oxygen sensor may be faulty
- Injectors may be faulty
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Lack of fuel
- Mass air flow sensor may be faulty
- Incorrect PCV hose connection

Possible Solution:
Dirty air filter of faulty air flow sensor are common causes of the problem.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

P2197 - DODGE - Sys Too Rich at Hier Load Bank1
Means that the O2 sensors on each bank are seeing WAY too much oxygen in the exhaust gas. In normal operation the signal from the O2 sensors should swing back and forth between rich and lean. Your sensors are locked on lean.

Those codes are the same as P0174 (and P0171). Sounds like you have a vacuum leak somewhere. Most common place is the PCV elbow where it connects to the throttle body adapter.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hope this helps; keep in touch.

SOURCE: how to test ignition coil

You need a sensitive good quality ohm meter, preferably with a zero adjustment, as these readings can be quite low.

The primary resistance is measured between the positive and negative terminals on the coil, and should read about 0.5 ohms (it varies with the model of car).

The secondary is measured usually between the positive terminal and the high tension terminal (thick lead), and is usually about 10 Kilo ohms (again it varies from car to car)

These are usually measured with the coil cool.

Thunderbird Starts Fine and after say 25 min drive on the highway. pull into lets say walmart run in back out and the car struggles to start bucking and such and usually stalls and wont start.. after it...

Sounds as if you are experiencing early stages of fuel pump failure. The pump motor is getting "hot" during the 25 minute drive. After you shut the car off and try to restart it,the pump is weak and not getting the fuel pressure up enough to allow for a quick start and smooth running. I would check the bleed down time on the fuel system and the pressure to see what it is before and after the 25 minute drive time.

How do i stop my 1994 ford explorer from sputtering and shutting down when driving at low speed

Not getting enough fuel. There are two coolant temperature sensors one for the gauge. one for the computer. the one to the computer monitors fuel. When it fails the engine is slow to start the first try and there is a strong odor of gasoline. The engine will run rough at some speeds and sometimes stall.

One of several possible issues. Check for any vacuum leaks. If you have an external fuel filter, have you replaced it ? If filter is internal with fuel pump, inside fuel tank, may want to do a fuel pressure test first.

Have you checked for any codes in your engine control module ?

2004 ford f350diesle hard starting depress throtle nothing there

Dear dsmalley427,
I think it sounds like a fuel injection problem. You get fuel for a while until the injector backs up and then all of a sudden NO FUEL. The engine quits and the pressure drops and flow returns enough for you to restart. If I were you I would get to a good mechanic and check the fuel injectors.
OR--try adding a fuel additive that would clean the injectors.--Signed jwr

1989 Ford Thunderbird starts bucking after 15 minutes

You might try is to check the TV or kick-down cable and ensure it is attached to the throttle lever. It is most likely right on top of the engine on the passenger side. It is the single top cable attached to the lever, The bottom 2 are the gas pedal and the cruise control servo cable. It should be attached to the lever with a rubber grommet with no slack in the cable. Most transmission shops will give you a grommet for free. Most likely, sadly, if you have been driving it this way very long, 4 months in my case, it will burn up the bands in first gear and will have horrible take-offs until one day it won't move at all.
