Hi there, I have a 2001 Dodge Stratus. Yesterday, when I turned on the car the AC decided to stop working. The fan would go on but only hot air will come out. The actual compressor was changed last year.Today when I turned it on the air came on and then went back off. I though *** may be the relay, which was replaced today and still the same issue. Does anyone have a good place to start? Thank you very much for your help
Check your freon level. Either have a mechanic do it or buy a charging kit from Walmart. One that has a gauge on it. You may just be low on freon refrigerant or have a leak.
Check the fuse for a/c compressor make sure it is completely pushed in slot then check wiring going to the high and low pressure switchs also if you have electric fans on radiator make sure it comes on when you turn on the a/c that would most likely be the cause of intermittent a/c issue also check plug on compressor if it was a lack of freon it wouldn't work at all

expansion valve looks like is not openning or the capilary tube is bad

Check the thermostat, and clean or replace the idle air control valve, replace the ball joints, replace the plugs and plug wiresthis should correct the problem.

Have you checked the coolant level? What you describe is exactly what happens if the coolant level is low. When stopped at idle, hot coolant is not circulating through the heater core, so no heat. As the engine increases in rpm's when you pull away from the light, the water pump is spinning quicker, and some coolant is making it to the heater core. So check the level, and if it is low, keep an eye on it to see if it drops again. That of course indicates a leak somewhere. Get it fixed, as overheating the engine leads to costly repairs and worse case a new engine. Let me know how you make out with this.

The pressure switch on the accumilator is at fault if you bypassed it and the compressor worked. Remove the plug-in on switch and move plug away from the accumilator. Then with a small wrench or small pliers remove pressure switch. (be sure to grab it at the base as close as possible). The freon will stay in the system after removal of switch ( there is a valve core inside the accumilator DO NOT REMOVE IT) Replace the switch and check to see that a new o-ring is on switch. Use a little refrigerent oil to lubericate the o-ring before installing. Hope this will help you.
