Ac compressor clutches get power from a relay via pressure switches.
If the system is low on freon, the low pressure switch prevents the ac clutch from engaging.
The clutch is a magnet.

Airconditioner on my 2004 jetta will not kick on

Had the same problem on my 2004 Jetta this summer. First check if it's low on freon If the clutch kicks on and off it needs a charge. Suct
press should be about 40-45psi. If you have the correct charge and the compressor clutch does not click when you turn switch on,the clutch is bad. I found it easier to change the whole compressor than just the clutch which requires special tools. You need to install a new filter drier also before recharging. Before I would spend $400 on a new compr I went to a local pick & pull and got one for $15 with a 30 day warranty. Doing the work myself including Freon, new compr oil, the filter which I got on-line from RockAuto.com
and the used compressor it came to a whopping $90. If you have a repair manual, follow the instructions carefully and do your own repairs you can do this. If not, it's still cheaper buying your own parts and paying someone to do it. You can also google instructions. I'm 81 yrs young and if I can do this anyone can. I hope this helped.

THE AIR CONDITIONING IN MY 2000 JETTA VR6 JUST STOPPED WORKING, NO WARNING. I HAD TWO DIFFERANT MECHANICS LOOK AT IT. THEY SAID THAT THE COMPRESSOR IS NOT GETTING ANY VOLTAGE, BUT WHEN THEY JUMP VOLTAGE TO THE COMPRESSOR IT STILL WILL NOT START. THEY SAID THE COMPRESSOR SEEMS TO BE OKAY. ANY SUGGESTIONS

My A/C will not blow cold on 2002 jetta 1.8t

The problem is the temperature blend door. Very costly to fix. I have a 2003 with the same problem. A diverter flap door that allows it to switch over from heat to air, is broken. The part is 400.00 and the labor itself is 800.00. The whole dash needs to come off. Everything is behind the dash. Sorry!

Ac compressor in 2000 vw jetta wont kick on

the first thing that i would check would be to see if there is votage going to the clutch. if there is not then check the pressure switch, relay, and fuse. if there is voltage to the clutch then replace the clutch and that SHOULD solve your problem.

A/c in jetta blows hot air, its been charged, compressor comes on.

you need to have it diagnosed by a professional. These are complicated systems even to a trained tech. You may be over or under charged, have a clogged expansion valve, have a leak or many other issues. This model has a rcv refrigerant control valve inside the compressor which regulates the pressure of the compressor. If you notice the compressor never shuts off like conventional auto a/c's do the only time the clutch works is when you turn it on or off. Can be complicated.
