How do I know if the harmonic balancer is separating on 03 Rav4

Vehicle makes a noise and really makes a loud noise when trying to steer the vehicle. After it runs for about 15 minutes in the morning, you can shut it off and wait about 30 seconds and it runs and steers fine the rest of the day. Replaced the power steering pump and the Rack and Pinion was replaced about 1/1/2 yrs ago. I was told it could be the harmonic balancer separating. Also it idles a little rough and the a/c doesn't work as well when at idle.

SOURCE: power steering makes loud noise after driving for

If the rack is accessible you could try to bleed the rack lines to get fresh fluid to the rack. Sometimes this helps. If not accessible or bleeding doesn't help Yes the rack is due for replacement.

SOURCE: replacing power steering hose and rack and pinion steering

when it comes to the power steering hose I would say just do it yourself. As for the rack and pinion it will probably cost you quite a few hours of labor. anywhere from 5-9. Its up to you!

SOURCE: 94 Camry steering hard to turn like it has no power steering. It has the rack replaced and steering knuckle replaced

Does the power steering have fluid in it. Is the belt on the pump. With it running take the cap off of the pump and see if fluid is moving around. If u feel the steering knucle is to tight u can also take the tie rod off and see if it turns free. Also go back to who fixed it and say its not right, Make it right. Most garages give 12 month or 12.000 mile warranty.

The out of the pulley with the harmonic balancer keeps coming out causing the belt to come off I've tapped it back on a couple of times it keeps coming back out only now my car has a loud knock what could...

typically harmonic balancers are balanced and indexed to the crankshart they are bolted to. the harmonic balancer should have been replaced when it first came apart. it sounds like the the reinstallation of the defective balancer caused the rotating assembly of the engine to be out of balance. given time this will always damage the main bearings of the engine and I think this is the loud knock you are now hearing. do not continue to use the car and take it to a competent mechanic to evaluate and give you an estimate for the repairs.

I have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it is making a really loud metal on metal noise near harmonic balancer. What could be the problem and how do I fix it?

Unplugged it and removed it. The vehicle must be running when you do this because the vehicle has a back up memory to the alarm.------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pulley on crankshaft is rattling bad is there a bearing

Billy you have the main bearings on the crankshaft, but you said a rattling noise, these pulleys are bolted to the harmonic balancer check the bolts that attach the pulley to the balancer to see if they are tight. Sometimes they can work their way loose. If it were a main bearing the engine would have a slight shake to it or in other words while the vehicle is idling the motor would shake along with a loss of oil pressure on your gauge in the vehicle. By the rattling it can be two things that come to mind either the harmonic balancer is coming apart or the pulley is coming loose from the balance. Hope this helps let me know what you find.

We changed the starter in my 2004 honda civic and it still won't turn over it makes a squealing noise and eventually it will start but sometimes takes multiple hours

When the vehicle starts and makes a squeeling noise that is your belt being loose, you need to tension that up,before you do that look and feel the Harmonic balances is it loose, because there is the crank sensor with a toner wheel that is responsible for correct timing so you need to make sure that harmonic balancer is not damage and that can be why squeel noise, that it is making and giving you such a hard time to start it up.So inspect to see if the Harmonic balancer has shifted.

2003 BMW 325i will start but making noise

It might be a faulty power steering pump. Try checking the level of the power steering fluid. It is probably best you have your power steering system checked by a mechanic.

Does the noise occur only when the vehicle is moving?

Try moving the steering wheel from side to side, while stationary (but don't do it too often, or you might damage something). If the noise is still present when the car is stationary, then it probably is the power steering system.

If the noise only occurs while the vehicle is moving, it could be a problem with the differential/final drive, or even wheel bearings.
