My timing belt needs to be replaced, I need to know if my engine is an interference or a non interference engine
Not sure but if doing belt yourself I will give you important tips. 1) before removeing T/Belt set engine to TDC nr 1 there should be marks on the crank and cam (s) gears that line up with a mark on the block / head. 2) prior to removeing tension to belt get liquid paper & mark cam gear(s) & crank gear to point on block / head. 3) mark T/Belt to cam(s), crank, balance shaft if fitted. 4) release tension & remove belt. 5) transcribe marks from old belt to new belt & make sure correct amount of teeth. 6) fit new belt so YOUR marks line up. 7) have tensioner suply presure to belt. 8) turn motor twice by hand to make sure pistons no hit valves 9) Make sure YOUR marks line up if YOUR marks line up it has to be right. 10) Very IMPORTANT if spring tensioner lossen locking bolt again to take up extra slack in belt. 11) tighten locking bolt. 12) put back together.

The 3.0 liter is a Mitsubishi design and is not a free wheeling engine or a non interference design, this does not mean the valves are bent, install the belt and then check for bent valves.

Timing chain is only available in the 3.3L and 3.8L engines.
Yours has a belt. (if you're SURE its a 3.0L)
Here is the info on changing it...
3.0L Engine
The timing belt can be inspected by removing the upper front outer timing belt cover.
Working
on any engine (especially overhead camshaft engines) requires much care
be given to valve timing. It is good practice to set the engine up at
TDC No. 1 cylinder firing position before beginning work. Verify that
all timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets are properly
aligned before removing the timing belt and starting camshaft service.
This serves as a point of reference for all work that follows. Valve
timing is very important and engine damage will result if the work is
incorrect.

forget what the makers say re belt change GET IT DONE EVERY 60K (you will soon find out if its an interferance engine when it snaps) just so you know, its not the belt that causes the problem but the tensioner being too tight when fitted.....(by a trainee)
