The lack of air flow through the other vents started suddenly, the A/C cools well, just up through the defroster vent only, I can't find the vacuum tubing that goes through the firewall so, I can't tell if it is due to a loose vacuum tube or if it is as the guy in the parts store said, that valve
Bad electrical door blend actuator. Not a vacuum activated door. Check under the dash to the right of the diver in the center of the air vents or on the passenger side under the dash and you should see the actuators with electrical plugs on them. You need to find the one for the defrost and replace it. Good luck.
Its a broken door blend actuator.

pipe going to the fire wall is usualy the cabin heater. for the time being there should be 2 hoses going to the fire wall coolant in/out. remove them from the pipe on the fire wall and blank them off or if the hose is split replace them. it could be the heater core but that usualy leaks into the cab.

Chances are the electronic/digital HVAC control unit is bad. This same problem happened to me and I had to replace the entire unit. The dealer wanted to charge $800 for just the part! After I freaked out on them, they found a used one for less than half. Sorry, but there's no easy fix here.

LOOK AT THE WHITE PLASTIC HOSE GOING TO THE RECIRC VACUUM ACTUATOR UNDER HOOD. THIS IS ON TOP OF A/C BOX BY RIGHT SIDE OF FIRE WALL YOU WILL FIND THIS HOSE IS STARTING TO COME APART REPAIR HOSE AND PROBLEM FIXED.

You probably have a vacuum leak on the passenger side. its a small plastic hose some times they come unpluged from the engine. or brake.

Sounds like you have a supply vacuum problem. When you lose supply vacuum to the control head it defaults to defrost.
