I was driving through town yesterday, and I heard something in the engine compartment start rubbing terribly. I pulled over and opened the hood up. The shaft coming out of the water pump that holds the pulley for the timing belt on completely snapped in half and wedged itself against the engine, but the pulley seems to have held pretty good tension on the timing belt even after it snapped. My question is, if I replace the water pump, do I need to re-time the engine? If so, how can I do this at home? It is a 2004 Mitsubishi Outlander LS AWD, with a 2.4L SOHC 16 valve MIVEC engine.

SOURCE: mitsubishi outlander cooling fans not operating
There is a Recall to replace your cooling fan module because of this concern.
Open your hood and look at the black box bolted to your radiator fan by the battery. If it does not have a green dot on it, you have not had the replacement fan module installed.
Contact your local dealer with your VIN handy to verify the recall has not been done and to schedule an appointment.
If the recall has been done, verify if you have power coming out of the module to the fans, as the fans do burn out eventually.... but rarely both at once.
SOURCE: remove rear brake drum 2004 Mitsubishi Outlander
Dear Brake Drum Remover,
I'm gonna tell you how to pull this drum off, ya ready?First off, get the rear of the vehicle up in the air safely, Then pull the rear tires off. After those are off then take a gander at the face of the drums, are there shiny brass looking screws installed on the face of that drum?Ifso remove those counterclockwise, then, take a hammer a shock the face off the drum firmly about three times. Now, go to the opposite side on the face of the drum and do that again, keep on doin that until you can wiggle the drum off by hand...easy as that, any other questions get back to me. I'M HERE TO HELP!!!
SOURCE: At what mileage should I change the timing belt on
It is suggested by any mechcanic to perform this maintenace every 80,000 miles if you properbly maintain your vehicle. That mean going by the owners manual suggestions. Also I would highly recomend changing the water pum as well for it runs off this belt and water pumps only last as long as the belt will also. If a new belt is installed without a new water pump it may fail in no time. I seen it happen more than a dozen times in the past ten years
