Everytime i start the car, it does this. it'll idle at around 1100rpm for like 3 minutes and then it will lower slowly down to the normal 600rpm. if i dont wait and shift into reverse the trans gives a strong jolt and goes into gear and going into drive isnt as bad but still does it. any ideas?
Could be a sensor problem. If you have a light on you may need to have it checked. Try cleaning the throttle body first and check air filter. Putting your car in gear at higher rpms will cause a jolt
That is because the transmission is timed with the throttle position sensor and the idle air control valve on automatic transmissions. If the position sensor starts to fail you will have usually high, low, or erratic throttle and it will act as if the transmission is slipping. Have a mechanic clean your throttle body, replace the gasket, change the IAC motor, and throttle position sensor. Its what they should do to your car anyway for a full tune up but its rare anyone does it anymore. So i always do my own and you definitely feel the difference
SOURCE: Ford Taurus: rough idle in drive and reverse
it could be that the tick over is two slow in brive,,,
set it up to tickover at 850,,950 rpm (in drive)
or it could be a gear box fult like the drive plate has a crack in it,,,letting the torque converter slap about,,,
chech tick over first,,, bont adjust tick over in gear unless the brakes are held hard on,,,
