1999 Jeep Cherokee won't start

Jeep was running great, went into the store and wouldnt start. After a few hours got the jeep running and got it home. IT started fine and once I put it in the garage it hasn't started since. I have replaced the spark plugs, crank position sensor, and throttle position sensor. The Jeep turns over but won't fire. There is spark, starter and fuel pump are working. Gauges work, battery is good.

When you got it started at the store did it run normally or was it sluggish? Try a new fuel filter. It is possible that it jumped time.

Are you getting spark from coil wire when cranking? If so, check the cap & rotor. If not, the most common failure is the crank sensor. If you have a 4,0, you can find it on the drivers side of the bellhousing, in line with the flywheel, just where it's annoying to work on. There is a test you can make, but I don't have the specific test values or the correct terminals to check. (you can find that info in any half decent manual.
Good luck

SOURCE: 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport cranks but will not start.

Pop off a spark plug wire, insert a screwdriver into the wire (hold onto the handle), hold a 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch away from engine and crank the engine. There should be a spark. If no spark you have a problem with either the ignition system or the ignition system control circuits. Generally if the computer dosen't see a crank signal you will not get a spark (if it doen't see a cam signal you won't get fuel). If no spark from wire try it on each wire. If not a single wire has spark, rent a scan tool from autozone or napa and see if there are any stored codes, also see if any codes come up while cranking. If you can't rent one you can buy a cheap one for under 30-40 dollars. If no codes and no spark the only thing you will have left to try is replacing the coil pack/s. If after replacing the coil packs you still don't have spark you will have to take it into a shop to have it checked out. The reason you would need to take it into a shop is because they will need to plug in a very expensive scan tool(1000-5000 dollars) that will show them all the sensor inputs. Hope this gets you up and running.

The crankshaft position sensor was seriously problematic in those old jeeps. It's located towards the top of the bell housing slightly to the driver's side I think.

Hi Roger, Sounds to me as if you may have a problem with the anti theft unit in your vehicle. A diagnostic scan would help greatly to pin point the problem. Regards John

My 1987 jeep cherokee pioneer will start but then you drive to the store come back out and it will not start until it sets for 5 or 6 hours..

You may have a faulty ignition coil. Check to see if system is firing when it won't start. If you have fire it is probably fuel pump.

Hi, i have a 1999 jeep grand cherokee, 4.0 litre, had the same problem, quits running out of the blue, driving down the road, or sitting idling. starts right back up or takes some cranking to get it running. found out that the crankshaft position sensor was going bad, cost 40$ for the part, but had to have mechinac replace it due to it's location, hard to get at. jeep runs great now.

98 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4X2 suddenly dies .....

It sounds like you have some **** in the gas tank that is being drawn to the pickup blocking it.
Have seen this and because it seems so random, it can drive ya nuts.

You might carry a coffee can with you and pull the line from the fuel rail when this happens stick it in the can and just have someone turn the key on for a few seconds.
Beware though, it comes out with force.

Also possible is a failed fuel pressure regulator.
Those aren't expensive and . . . well, not very good either.
