Electrical Short in 1998 Plymouth Neon

We cannot figure out what is causing my daughter's car to need a jump every morning in order for it to start. Nothing is left on inside the car when she gets home each evening around 5 or 6 PM. We recently installed a new battery and a new alternator in an attempt to fix the problem. This did not fix the problem. We believe something is not grounded, there's a short somewhere, and perhaps something is draining the battery. How do we fix this problem once and for all.

On these vehicles, there is a fusible link placed between the output terminal of the alternator and the engine starter motor terminal.

Your fusible link could be burnt, follow all wires tied into positive cable on battery.

SOURCE: van wont start

I had a similiar problem recently. The car would not start and no sign of life no lights etc. I jump started it acouple of times but then even this did not work. It would jump start but right after the cables are disconnected it would stop. We checked the battery it was good. Turned out it was the alternator. It was not working properley so the system was not charging itself or even when it starts was not generating enough energy to keep it going. Changed the alternator, never had the same problem again. You can have your battery and alternator checked at an autozone shop for free.

SOURCE: 1997 Neon dies, starts after electric fuel pump relay swapped

Hello, I would assume this is your fuel pump inside your tank. I would first however do some basics like a general tuneup. For starters I would replace your spark plugs and wires, rotary cap and button and check your fuses. Run some injector cleaner through your system. You know quick simple cheap things before you get to the fuel pump inside the gas tank which can be kinda expensive. The warm up then dies can be caused by, "blownout or fouled," spark plugs. I hope this gives you a general direction in which to go. A sidenote is that coil packs do not normally run an igntion code and I for one do not like them becuase they are expensive.

SOURCE: battery charge light comes on a few minutes after car starts

Couple of things to check, first this may be nothing more than a belt that has loosened or stretched after the install. There should only be about a quarter of an inch stretch in the belt between pulleys. Caution - only check with engine stopped!!! The alternator causes a strong resistance when it is producing electric power, so slippage is to be checked first. Second, if the battery light comes on and off; it maybe acting in error. Get a multi-meter and check the battery voltage with car and ignition shut off. With the meter set on 12volt bat, place the black probe on the negative side of battery or ground and the red probe on the positive side of battery. If you get a reading of 12.66 v the battery is being charged and is full. If you get 12.45 you have a 50% charged battery. If less the alternator wiring needs further checking into as there maybe issues with wiring or the alternator itself. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: where is the voltage regulator on a 1999 plymouth

Just to make it clear...I didn't say that the regulator was drawing power, ranthe that if the alternator checked out, the regulator may not be allowing it to charge properly.

Gauges in my 1998 plymouth neon stopped working when i hit a bump

Sounds like an intermittent loss of power to the instrument cluster to me. Remove the instrument cluster and inspect the electrical connectors on the back of the cluster.
