Door will close but latch will not lock

I have a 1999 Olds Silhouette - the power door closing mechanism broke years ago and the cable detached. For several years now I have been closing the door by hand and it has worked without issue.

Today the passenger sliding door will not latch. When I close it - the door just bounces back open. When I slide the interior handle back and forth there is no tension on the handle - usually it feels like there is something providing tension.

I have tried the following:

1) Disconnected the battery to reset the system
2) Checked the child lock and toggled it
3) Enabled and disabled the sliding door override button on ceiling center console.
4) Sprayed WD40 on latches
5) Warmed up the van just in case something is frozen
6) Parked the van in the garage so the temp is above 10 Degrees Celcius - 50 degrees Fahrenheit

If anyone has a solution I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Eric

I have this problem as well. The latch is getting stuck. I haven't been able to fix it permanently but you can get it to latch if you hit the door by the handle. It will release the latch and allow it to latch when you close the door.

Try and check the latch in the door sometimes they catch and don't open all the way it may take a screwdriver to pry it up or it could be a clip has broke inside the door on the trip mechenizm and won't let it hit the spring tension to lock it shut.

Your problem is the door thinks that it is already locked and closed. You need have the sliding door unlocked, have someone pull the handle as if they were going to open the door and then use a tool to "Open" the latch that normally would hold the door closed.

Drivers side door will not stay closed locked or unlocked.

Check the latch mechanism on the side of the door away from the hinge. The easiest way I can think of to do this is to push a large bolt (about the same size as the door latch pin on the frame) into the latch mechanism to simulate the door closing action. The latch should close over the bolt and not allow you to pull the bolt out in the door open direction unless you open the door handle.

If the latch works properly, check the door alignment to make sure it is actually engaging the pin.

1999 Chevrolet Venture Power sliding door opens back up after closing. I have cleaned the contacts on the door post and on the door itself. There is nothing in the way, ie: weatherstripping or seat belts....

simple door latch, try unplugging the power and see if the door opens, if it does its not the motor. if the door is out of alignment it wont latch. if the latch in the door is broke it wont latch. try locking the door when its closed.

All of my doors are closed yet in my 1999 lincoln navigator the light reads door ajar. i believe it is my trunk. but now my lights stay on and drains my battery what can i do

Try spraying WD40 directly into the door latches and opening and closing the doors several times. Usually this will free a sticking door ajar switch.

My driver side mirror broke off on 1999 olds silhouette can't get door panel off found 2 bolts anything else or just force loose?

If you removed the 2 bolts near the handle (1 you reach by removing the lock & pwr windows control panel by prying it up, it will pop loose) there are plastic bolts/clips that press in through openings around the edge of the door panel. Just pry out slowly and they should pop out. Work your way around the door. It should slide off over the release handle which you may want to pull outward so it slides over it easier. I just did this 2 days ago to replace my passenger mirror.

Closeing my back drivers side door

If the door itself will not stay closed then it is not the power locks but the latch that is malfunctioning, the locks only allow or disallow the latch from opening when you try to open the door.  Thoroughly lubricate the latch mechanism on the door with something like WD-40 and inspect it for damage, make sure the bolts that hold the latch within the door are tight and are aligned correctly.  After you lubricate it, close and open the door to work the lubricant in.  Also if you have child lock switches on the door, make sure the switch is fully off or on.  If all else fails then the handle/latch mechanism may need to be replaced.
