Silverado shuts off when I slow down and turn in 4wd.

I have a 2003 silverado 4 wheel drive. The truck drives fine in 2wd and 4wd but when I slow down to turn in 4wd probably under 10 mph then the car shuts off. It starts back up and will run fine as long as I dont slow down and turn again. Other than that the 4wd words fine. Any ideas?

Have a complete service done on your truck. When your fluids are changed, have the technician look for metal particles in them. While some are common, if a lot are present, it may indicate sever wear. I would look for this especially in the engine oil. Though I doubt any damage was done, that was for sure very stressful on your truck. I didn't know that a truck would go that fast in 4low. Also watch the behavior of your transmission and engine. Your transfer case should be shifted a few times too.

SOURCE: My 1999 chevy silverado 1500 four wheel drive

You probably have a bad encoder motor. It is located on the side of the transfer case on the drivers side.It is black. The other problem they had with these was the switch but you have already replaced this so your next thing is the encoder motor.Hope this helps.Good luck.

SOURCE: 2000 chevy silverado 4x4 rear end noise

I would think there is a problem with the tranfer case. I would check the fluid level in the rearend and address the leak.

Truck will only drive in 4wd, no power to rear wheels

I would guess your differential. Raise your rear end and try rotating wheel, it should make the other wheel spin the opposite direction. I'd the other wheel doesn't spin, I would say it's your differential.

My 99 Chevrolet silverado 4wd not working.ive replaced the dash switch and still nothing .when I turn the key the 4wd switch lights stay on for a split second then goes off. What else should I try?

I have run into to this problem many times on these trucks, i have seen your problem and also where the 4wd high light wont work but 4wd low and 2wd work fine and the 4 wheel drive works fine. on your truck i will bet its the transfer case selector motor.
the motor is what turns the lights on when in the selected mode which goes through the 4wheel module under the dash, this sounds like a bad selector motor and that where i would start. this motor is located on the transfer case, it bolts to the rear of it.here is a picture of it to help you locate it. good day.4_14_2012_12_37_13_pm.jpg

I have a 1997 Silverado 2500 4x4. I went to take it out of 4 wheel this morning and the shift lever now slides freely leaving it in 4 wheel high. How can I fix this and can it still be driven on the...

Sounds like you broke the linkage. I'd get down there, and manually put it in 2WD by you activating the linkage from where it's snapped, it's a bad idea to drive anywhere but on the mud if 4wd, if the axles turn at different speeds, it could snap a driveshaft, or worse, the differential.

What is auto 4 wheel drive?

Auto 4 wd is when the Silverado's PCM takes readings from the front and rear driver shaft and when there is any detection that the speeds are different. The Auto 4WD will activate the transfer case to lock it self to 4wd until the front and rear drive shaft are running at the same given speed of rotation.

Thank you for using fixya

2003 silverado Z71 feels like it is in 4WD when it is not.

not sure what you are concerned about here, probably fuel economy i'm guessing? you might consider purchasing a "scangauge II" which will give you a digital readout of about every sensor on your truck, including fuel consumption, ignition timing, knock ******, MAP, intatke temp, trans temp, etc.

it also reads/resets codes, i have found it to be a great diagnosis gauge/tool
