sounds like over drive switch or transmision box

is the car on in incline if so you may have to user some force to get it out, the other problem may be the linkage at trany but this is only if the shifter moves and car is in park, if the shifter doesnt move and theres no incline then make sure the brake lights work because when you step on the brake the shift lock releases the shifter and it gets power from the brake switch so if the light dont work theres no power to the shift lock to release, try these check first. hope this helps,

tran is bad

Solenoid pack in trans. Position module,is just that. Wrong guess. What tran model do you have? You also have other sensors to consider but have to know the trans your working on and the computer and shift stratagy involved to solve this,even if your throwing parts at it.

Check transmission fluid level. If that's okay, it may be starving for gas because of a partly clogged fuel filter, and the ECM won't allow it to shift. Could also be a clogged filter in the transmission.

the speed sensor only affects overdrive, what is the problem exactly, have you run a trouble code tes to see if any shift related codes show up in memory.

The ford taurus is know for having a weak transmission, however if the transmission is serviced regularly you can avoid problems.
