I was letting the engine run to charge battery after a a jump start when smoke and steam were pouring out. also noticed water puddle under car

When you say "now won't start" does the starter motor spin the engine the engine just never fires, or does the starter motor not even spin the engine? Do all the electrical accessories seem to work correctly? How deep was the puddle? Did the "smoke" smell like something melting, or might it have just been steam from water on the hot exhaust?

More than likely the intake manifold. It has a crossover tube for coolant in the front of the engine, rite behind alternator. Very common to crank there and water would come out front andrear of eengine area because it flows into empty valley in center of motor and leaks to the rear onto tranny housing and onto exhaust. Causing steam, white smoke. but this is just a guess, could also have a blown or leaking head gasket, hose pretty much anything can have deteriorated in that time.I suggest no running it, until a mechanic can come look at it with a coolant pressure tester.

Most likely a hose failed between the radiator and the engine. Stopping and having the repairs before seriously overheating the engine is very important.

If a hose failure is confirmed have both hoses replaced.

could be bad water pump,leaking anti freeze,may have blown the head gasket as result overhaeting engine,check oil for milky gray color,or see if coming out exhaust if so blown head gasket,have someone help you check it out

IF the heater core was leaking you would notice it inside the car. You would notice the smell of coolant inside. Also your windshield would probably instantly fog up when you turn the heat on. Do you notice puddles of coolant under the car? You can buy or possibly rent a cooling system pressure tester which is simple to use. You remove your radiator cap and itstall the tester and pump up the cooling sytem to what ever PSI your cap is rated for and let it sit for a few minutes. IF the PSI drops that means there is a leak somewhere and you should be able to find it if you see any puddles under the car. If not you may have an internal leak such as a bad head gasket or cracked head. Or possibly a bad intake manifold gasket. Does your oil look milky. If so that means there is coolant in it? Do you notice excessive steam or white smoke from your exhaust? If so I would suspect a head issue.

Are you noticing any puddles under your truck? You can buy or possably rent a pressure tester that you just remove the radiator cap and hook the tester up in it's place and pump up the cooling system and watch for leaks. If there are no puddles it must be leaking into the engine from a leaky head gasket or intake manifold gasket. Do you notice excess steam or white smoke from your exhaust? Does your oil look milky? If it does water is leaking into the crankcase. Does it run rough at all? You can start your truck with the radiator cap off and watch for bubbles. If you see alot of bubbles it could be exhaust or compression gasses which would confirm a bad head gasket or cracked head.

Could be several things from radiator ,hoses,water pump, FREEZE PLUGS ,cracked head or block. You need to find out where the coolant is coming from to determine it.
If the car was hot and you poured fluid in it the block,head or head gasket could crack. If it was cold and you just had watr in it the block could crack or freeze plugs could have came out.

Your auto is definitely loosing coolant and will overheat. Check your thermostat, hoses, belts, radiator cap and water pump. If you do not fix the leak or coolant circulation problem you can destroy your engine. The smell inside can be being picked up from the outside vent or it could be your heater core inside the ventillation area leaking (which could be your coolant leak).. If that is the case you will need to replace the heater core.

If smoke, you may have a leak in a hose. When cool, check for water marks usually coming from the connection to the radiator. Another thing to do but may be dangerous is to load up the radiator with water and start the engine, let it run for about 15min for it to heat up and look for water spray. Also, when parked, is there a puddle of water under the car?

Also, I would check the water level in the radiator (never open when hot), to see if i need to add water. Don't look at the reservoir as a reference. It could be just low.

The key here is you think there may be smoke coming from the hood.

Another thing, if the radiator is full of water, then it could be your thermostat. it is usually located at the end of the top hose which runs from the radiator to the engine. In this picture, you are looking at the top of the engine looking down. This is the location of the Thermostat. If your vehicle is close to over heating, this valve could be getting stuck.

As a test, remove the thermostat and try driving it around to see if it gets close to overheating.
