A few days ago the engine fan came on half an hour after a 2 minute journey. it stayed on for ages and drained the battery. i topped up the water and coolent as suggested by friend and left battery to re surge. it started ok and was fine. a couple of days later i found the battery dead again so got a jump start. i left the engine running for about 40 mins to re charge the battery before i tried driving it but then steam and i think smoke was coming out from under bonnet. there was a large puddle of water ( no oil in it ) underneath. the fan doesnt seem to have come on. did i leave it running too long or it there a problem with my fan?

I believe it is your factory anti-theft system. check your owners manual for how to disengage same.

if you mean the interior fan
replace fan control resistor driver side footwell in climate housing

hello, if the vehicle ran with cable off one would ASUME alternator is ok! however, i bad diode in the aletnator would allow it to charge yet have a massive voltage draw as well, almost all of todays parts stores will do a free starting and charging test for you! ......ps a large voltage drop would rob your ignition of voltage causing your miss!.good luck, marty

Replace your battery when its being tested there not testing it under a heavy enough load. A battery could have a dead cell in it and still show good on the charger. I've had that problem a few times.
SOURCE: BMW X3 2.5si M series. High Oil Consumption
hi, this consumption seems high, i would take it to a dealer and ask them to check the oil sensor.......
P.S. is there a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust, if so, it may be burning a little oil, ask dealer to check it
