Pulled tranny out, rebuilt it, put it back in, now i cant put it back into reverse or park and sometimes neutral with the column shift lever. when i removed the trans, as i tried to loosen the nut on the shift linkage at the trans, it moved it down to 1st gear. maybe i streched the cable or something?
I have a 1994 gmc jimmy 4x4 with an automatic transmisson my parking gear works and reverse ..and my 1-2nd gear works only when i put the column shifter in thoese gears ...but when i shift it into drive and over drive right when it goes to shift into 3rd it pegs out rpms fr a second then idles down so im stuk with 1-2nd ... im a poor boy tryin to fix it on the fly..... how to i go about fixing the prblem ????? please hlep thanks !!
On the 1995 Jimmy, the shift cable can come loose on the mount on the side of the transmission where the cable meets the trans. When it slips, the alignment goes off and causes the driver to not be able to put the trans into park. If you take a long stick you can push the shift arm on the trans to the park position and your trans will go into park.....what you (and I) really need to know is how to take the shift cable mount apart and reset it.
SOURCE: shifting lever doesnt lock
Likely the shift detent mechanism is broken. It's inside the unit and can be reached by removing the trans pan. It should be just inside where the shift lever goes through the case.

You need to remove top off gearbox and with a pry bar or screw driver pull the selector back into neutral Your gearlever has popped out of selector Gearbox does not need to be removed
SOURCE: shift lever is loose and won't shift
Yes you can repair it your self, check under the dash where the trans cable hooks to the shift lever, where the eye of the cable hooks on there are two screws, if these are loose the truck will still shift but the free play makes slack and the cable will not move all the way. If this piece is not loose you will have to lower the steering column and check this shaft, they are know to split in two and with the column down they are easy to change.
