Sounds like you have clutch problems, this can be the hydraulic release system or the clutch plate that is defective, only a trained technician can tell the difference. Most shops will do a preliminary diagnostic for free.

not sure on the set up of whether its rods or cables on this model for your gear linkages but sounds like one has either detached or broken which should be a relatively easy fix and not too expensive.Get a friend to move through gears while you look under to see whats moving and whats not.

Hi,

Here is some possible reasons why your transmission is having those problems .

* The gear shift linkage is binding
* There is an internal problem in the transmission
* The throttle cable is broken or disconnected
* The vacuum modulator on the transmission is faulty or the vacuum line is damaged
* The electronic transmission control circuit may be faulty

Sean Pried it could be your A604 4 Speed Automatic Transmission Shift Solenoid which is located just in front of your transmission dip stick.

Have someone scan the transmission for bad shift sensors.

SOURCE: when i slow down the trans shifts hard and stays

This is called a 2nd gear limp mode -- it is a safety devise in the computor to prevent interior damage to the transmission -- the cause could be a speed sensor or a blown rear low/reverse seal inside the transmission.

I just had clutch kit put in 2003 Dodge Neon. It pulls now but jerks when shifting. Why would it be doing that? It's like when your learning to drive one and drop clutch in too high of a gear.

It will take a while for the clutch disc and pressure plate to bed in, and it also takes a while for your leg to re-learn where the clutch bites.

Better hope more that the timing belt is ok. If it IS OK and you do find the problem, be sure to replace the belt, tensioner and the water pump, if it wasnt replaced at 90K miles.

2003 neon - when i shift it's "puttering" almost

who knows what your car needs. but if you have anywhere near 90k miles or if you know it has never been replaced. replace the timing belt, tensioner and water pump ASAP. If it breaks, the engine is trashed and a Neon isnt going to be worth a new engine.

You dont have to pull the tranny to fix this. Some so called "experts" on here shouldnt be giving advice if they dont know. The solenoid pack is located in the front the transmission just below the air filter and in front of the input speed sensor you just replaced. Unbolt the connector with a 10mm socket then the bolts connecting to the tranny. Replace with a new one 140 bux or close(get a new one). Installation is vice versa. Easy fix for any person who is mechanically inclined. Always get a second or third opinion when asking a thousand dollar question on any website. Some people think they know....but they dont.
