Rough idle multipule misfire

Car idles rough and trips codes multipule misfire on all cylinders. changed coil pack in distributor, plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. No change. Also Sea Foamed engine, no change. Ongoing now for about 6 months. The car does burn through oil about a quart every 500 miles although it is not blowing blue out of the tail pipe. How can I get it to run smooth again? Also the gas mileage is still great about 34-38 highway 28-32 around town

Hi. The most common cause that I have found for an " only idle misfire" is low compression. The engine needs at least 100 psi of "dry " compression to idle smoothly in most cases and if any cylinders are higher or lower by more than 20 percent of any other cylinder, you will also have an idle misfire condition felt. Should you perform a compression test, make sure to disable the igntion system completely, not just move the ignition wires out of the way as you will still have spark and the fuel injectors will still inject fuel in nearby proximity to possible ignition source. Always perform two tests, "dry" and "wet" compression. "Dry" is warm engine with spark plugs removed. "Wet" is after performing "dry" test add a few drops of light oil into cylinders and perform compression test again to see if the number rise. If they rise, you have worn piston rings or cylinder walls. If they do not rise, you likely have worn valve seats, misadjusted valves, or head gasket issues, possibly cracks in the cylinder head. If you need to know how to compression test with a tester in detail, message me back and I can help. I'm assuming you may already know due to the fact you state you replaced all the parts likely by yourself so you probably have strong technical merit.

Thank You so much, I tested out my compression and you hit the nail on the head. BAD compression on the #2 cylinder. Seems to be bad rings as I put oil in the cylinder and the reading went from 30psi to 90psi. Again thank you as the other 10 people or so that I spoke with at the auto parts stores were clueless. Now hmmmm How to fix this problem or would it be easier to just get a used engine and replace??????????????

SOURCE: rough idle with check engine light

Usually a rough idle on a Honda is a result of the idle speed being too low. What is your RPM suring idle now. Try to increase it using the screw on the idle air control by only a quarter turn at a time. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: 1996 Honda Accord Rough Idle Even After tune up

Perform a valve clearance inspection and adjust if necessary. Tight or sticking valves will cause a misfire or rough running concern. Note: Perform valve adjustment when the engine is stone cold. 4cyl: INT 0.26mm EXH: 0.30mm (V6 engine are hydraulic and no adjust necessary.) Also check for a sticking or stuck open EGR valve. For diagnostic purposes only: Remove the EGR valve. Place a business card over the EGR passage and bolt the EGR valve back on. This plugs the EGR ports and if the misfire goes away the EGR valve is partially stuck open and is defective.
Check for low fuel pressure. Check for low compression. Check cam timing. Check for a weak ignition coil. Also don't over look the possibility of worn or broken engine mounts which cause excessive engine movement and engine vibration. -hope this helps

Car is idling rough all coil packs have been changed along with spark plugs

Dont get another harness. If you are using Autozone supplied coil packs, the problem is most likely the coils from Autozone. I have went through this exact same thing before. I changed the coild because one had a burn mark on the boot between the plug and the coil pack. I noticed it when changing spark plugs. The new coil from Autozone made the vehicle struggle on take offs and idle rough and the vehicle had no power. I installed another coil from Autozone again which was supposedly a better model and costed more. The vehicle ran a little smoother but the rough idle and small misfire was still there. I installed another coil from the dealership and the problem was fixed immediately.
I also replaced one of the coil connectors for a different cylinder but only because i broke it when disconnecting the coil packs to remove the spark plugs.
And when I installed all my coils and the new one from Autozone, I used dielectric grease on all the connectors. But the rough idle and power loss was immediate following installing the new coil from Autozone.
Beware if you are using coils from another part store because many part stores get their parts from the same source.

Multiple misfire

Hi Jason:
A Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected unfortunately doesn't tell you specifically which cylinder(s) is/are mis-firing, nor why.

A code Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
Faulty spark plugs or wires
Faulty coil (pack)
Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
Faulty fuel injector(s)
Burned exhaust valve
Faulty catalytic converter(s)
Stuck/blocked EGR valve / passages
Faulty camshaft position sensor
Defective computer

Possible Solutions:
If there are no symptoms, the simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.

If there are symptoms such as the engine is stumbling or hesitating, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the car, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular maintenance schedule. I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable). Otherwise, check the coils (a.k.a. coil packs). In some cases, the catalytic converter has gone bad. If you smell rotten eggs in the exhaust, your cat converter needs to be replaced. I've also heard in other cases the problems were faulty fuel injectors.

Random misfires that jump around from one cylinder to another (read: P030x codes) also will set a P0300 code. The underlying cause is often a lean fuel condition, which may be due to a vacuum leak in the intake manifold or unmetered air getting past the airflow sensor, or an EGR valve that is stuck open.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

95 maxima rough idle

The injector could definitely trigger a misfire code, but you also mentioned that you had a mass airflow sensor code , that code code be responsible for te sluggish moment of the vehicle and rpm going up and down. However if you have a misfire onCyl#6 and the coil and the plug is good the ONLY other thing to cause a mis-fire would be the injector. To check the injector get a NOID light, you can get one at almost any auto-parts place. To use unplug injector plug from the bad injector and connect it to NOID light the light should have a steady PULSE/ligt flickering. If light flickers fine then injector is bad and will need to be replaced. If light doesn't flicker or flickers intermittently then you may have a bad wiring to that injector. Check if wiring is good, then you may have a bad cam sensor or sensor gear. Good Luck and contact if you need more help. Thanks for using FIX YA
