I have a 2002 VW Beetle. It has appx 44,000 miles. I bought it used in January. Everything seems to work like a dream except.... When driving around town for an extrend period of time (3-4 hours) like when we are running errands or go from one end of Orlando to another, we can either be driving along or usually happens the worse when brakes are applied coming to a stop or red light, the car suddenly jerks (first time it happened I literally thought someone bumped into me), then the engine acts like it is getting no gas and either it stalls out completly or it take a few seconds for the gas to start up again. Once this starts it does not stop until the engines rests for a few hours. On a recent trip it cut out on us 10 times in a 3 mile drive until we made it home. We have had it to 2 mecanics, both have put it on the machines, no codes. It of course does not do it for them. My 18 year old drives it and I am so affraid this is going to happen to her at an intersection and she gets side swiped. HELP. Does anyone have any suggestions? As a percaution, we have had the fuel pump and the cooling fans replaced. Did nothing.. THANK YOU!!!
Hello,
my advise to you is that:
Your VW problem is the throttle body, (good news) it doesn't need replacement, it only needs to be cleaned out, and even better if a good technician (know what he is doing) can run an adaptation procedure.
this will restore the ZERO position for the TPS and relearn the target engine idle speed.
Good luck.
Note: you are in my prayer.

Sorry to say but you and I are in the same boat. The 2004 Beetle Convertible is the biggest piece of **** on the road! My wife and I have had one, pre-certified mind you, since 2005. We have had THOUSANDS of dollars of work done to this car, mainly covered by warranty. We attempted to have this problem fixed by out local VW Dealer. It is one of three things... 1) It's a vacuum problem. All of the vacuum hoses need to be replaced. I wouldn't do this since our dealer did this for us (400 bucks) and nothing changed, same problem occurred after we had all the work done. 2) It is the ignition coil (800 price installed with new wires and plugs from the dealer) 3) It's the fuel pump... This came from the service advisor at the dealership. I sincerely hope you got the extended warranty!!! Good luck...

it starts from cold because the auto choke is on ,allowing a richer mixture ,try removing the sender unit in the tank and seeing if the connection from the pump to the outlet connection is ok or leaking causing a loss of fuel pressure

The thermostat on your volkswagon helps the engine keep operating at a predetermined temperature for best fuel economy and engine performance. However, the thermostat mechanism wears down after months of use and subsequently fails. If stuck in the closed position, the thermostat will not allow coolant to circulate, causing the engine to heat up dangerously; if stuck in the open position, the engine will never reach proper operating temperature, causing fuel consumption and poor engine performance. In either case, the thermostat must be replaced. Its fairly cheap

I am having the exact same problem with my VW Touareg @60,000 miles. Two weeks ago and again today it sputters and stalls shortly after starting. I brought it into the shop and they could not reproduce the problem and said it was fine. Also, they had no ideas when I describes the problem. Anyone know what it going on? I am out of warranty.

the first step would be to have the computer scanned for any codes or freeze frame data.
