Battery still drains. Seat modules unplugged already

Hi, our 2001 C320 still has battery drain issues. After changing the battery, the seat module was unplugged the drain stopped for a good 2 months. Now it's draining after a day. I think the SOS tele aid issue is a factor. Also the alarm goes off out of the blue. Any solutions to stop the drain? I can't unplug everything.

Find your fuse panel. Take a picture of it with your cell telephone. With the car off, with a volt meter, remove the fuses one at a time. Measure every slot to find out what is hot and what is not. Any Hot circuits should be examined closely to find out what is ON when the car is OFF.

Places to look ... light in the trunk??? is it on or off with the lid closed? Under the hood? Same. Do you have a radio that comes on with the key off??? GPS, you leave plugged in? Cell phone or other gadgetry you may have plugged in to the aux power supply? Any other lights? Parking lights for example? Security system? CB radio?

After you have checked these items, and if you find nothing, you may want to have your alternator examined. If you have a shorted diode in the alternator, the power may be draining back to ground through this shorted diode. You could perform this test yourself by unplugging or disconnecting the alternator during the periods when you are not driving the car. If this is the trouble, on day three, when you reconnect the alternator, two things you will note: 1) there will be a pretty big spark & 2) you will still have charge in the battery (evidenced by the spark)(there will be some spark no matter what ... but a big spark will mean a big drain). I have seen shorted diode problems fixed by inserting a toggle switch in the alternator power circuit. The alternator will still charge the battery when the switch is ON with the car running. When you stop the car, turn the switch off, power will not drain through the alternator to ground. Probably not the solution for your Mercedes. The real solution is to replace the alternator.

BTW - do you have a security system in your car? A thief proof radio? Check your owner's manual for precautions you should take before disconnecting your battery with regard to the anti theft features of your vehicle.

You say your battery is new and dead after three days. If fully charged on day one, and dead on day three, that means your battery has expended between 500 (economy battery) and 1000 (premimum battery) "amp hours" of power (500 amps / 72 hours = about 7 amps per hour going somewhere. (An 'amp hour' is one amp for one hour) Ohm's Law applies.

I hope you find your trouble and I hope I have given you a few leads. Thanks for allowing me to assist you with this problem this morning ... good luck.

They usually have a circuit breaker, which is also in your fuse box, but you are probably wiser to find the plug-in for your seat, because fuses and breakers often control more than one thing. Trace the wires back from your seat until you find a connection, and unplug it.

Disconnect the positive lead of the battery and hook a simple test light from that lead to the positive post of the battery. The light will come one for a second and go out. If it stays on you can start looking for the short by one by one pulling fuses going to circuits that don't need the keys to work. The frist thing befiore starting this test is to unplug the hood light if you have one. If the courtesy light isn't the problem, pull that fuse and you can do the rest of the testing with the doros open. Good luck.

MB 2001 C320 still has battery drain issues after new battery and unplugged seat module

Here are the general instructions to find a battery parasitic drain, it is different for each problem and there is no magic bullet fix.

Instructions
    • Charge your battery if necessary. Dead batteries (and even weak ones) don't give accurate results on a draw test. The dome light is a good indicator of battery strength. If the light is weak, pulsating or refuses to turn on, you'll need to charge the battery.
    • 2Shut off everything in the car. Pull the keys out of the ignition. Ensure all service lights are off, lighted compartments closed and doors shut. Open the hood, and disconnect the trouble light underneath if your vehicle has one. Wait for 30 minutes before moving on to Step 3. (This enables normal drain from interior components to finish cycling.)
    • 3Set your battery tester to 10 amps DC. Disconnect your positive battery connection (red cable) and position it safely away from metal components. Connect the meter's positive probe to the battery's positive post while simultaneously holding the negative probe in the air; keep it away from anything metal.
    • 4Place the negative probe on the end of the removed positive cable to complete the circuit. Yes, you're putting a negative on a positive. Yes, this is ok. If you have a severe drain, you're likely to pop a fuse or two-identifying your problem.
    • 5Check the meter reading. A normal reading is usually under .035 amps. If you have a minor drain that causes a higher reading, you'll need to check each component.
    • 6Remove the first fuse in the box, and check to see if the load problem is resolved. If not, replace the fuse and check the next one. Repeat the process with all fuses. If the fuses check out fine, you have a wiring problem.
    • 7Remove the tester and reconnect the battery. Follow the hot wire to the next connection. Remove the positive cable and connect the positive probe of the tester in its place. Connect the negative probe to a metal object. Check the meter. If the drain isn't resolved, reconnect as normal and follow the hot wire to the next connection. Repeat this step at each connection point until you narrow down the problem.

Hi I have an electical problem in my c240-2001...if i leave the car 2 days without driving it...the day i come to turn on the engine..it dosen;t work...out of power it is like the battery is empty...my...

Common problem on the early C-class. There are a few control modules that used to cause the battery to go dead overnight because they kept the C.A.N. system alive. The easiest ones to get at and disconnect are the seat control modules located under the driver and passenger seat. Unplug those two control modules and then see if you can start the car in a couple days. The other two are the overhead control panel or dome light assembly and the radio head unit. These were the most common control modules that got changed out in the dealers. Start there and let me know what happens.

I have a short that causes battery to go down. checked fuses and #1 fuse in main fuse box is draining by battery. I need a wiring diagram to help me. can you help with this problem?

Helm.com, has factory wiring diagram manual. Have to buy it.

If you had a short, a fuse would open, and the circuit effecting your battery drain, would not be an issue.
You have a module not timing out or other electronic current drain, from a failed component.
You will find the issue,as you said, with a wiring schematic and proper trouble shooting

ISSUE: Some vehicles may exhibit excessive electrical system current draw which could result in a discharged battery and a no crank condition.
ACTION: Use the following Service Tips to monitor the vehicle electrical system for excessive battery current drain and repair as needed. Refer to the following Service Information Tips for details.
SERVICE INFORMATION Having a firm grasp on the design and normal operation of the electrical system will aid in properly diagnosing and repairing any faults with electrical components and/or circuitry. When the vehicle is at rest (ignition key turned off and removed), some amounts of battery current drain will be present since many of the modules and electronic components in the vehicle require this to sustain memory and system monitoring. The Powertrain Control Module, Antilock Brake Module, Electronic Automatic Temperature Control Module, Front Electronics Module, Rear Electronics Module, Driver Door Module, Instrument Cluster Module, Roof Opening Panel Module, Heated Seat Module, Driver Seat Module, Cell Phone Module and Vehicle Emergency Message System Module all have power supplied at all times for this purpose. Many of these modules monitor activity and communicate with each other through the Standard Corporate Protocol (SCP) Link. When the ignition key is first shut off and removed, the vehicle is exited and the doors are closed, the electrical system goes into "stand-by" mode, where the Rear Electronics Module (REM) and the Front Electronics Module (FEM) keep the System Switched Power (SSP) relays activated. After a minimum of 45 minutes, the REM and FEM will power down to prevent battery discharge. Power down mode occurs when the REM and FEM "time out" and release the ground on all 4 (four) of the SSP relays. The SSP relays are wired in a fashion in which they are either all on or all off. In other words, the SSP relays cannot be operated independent of each other. If power down does not occur, because of a system fault or errant SCP Link activity, the REM and FEM will remain energized along with the SSP relays and the other electrical devices that they provide power. The REM and FEM provide power and ground to devices such as exterior/interior lighting and many of the body modules in the vehicle. The Wiring Diagrams Manual may be referenced for additional information on the SSP relays, the REM and FEM, in Sections 13 & 59. Once the REM and FEM enter power down mode they will not energize the SSP relays until they are commanded to "wake up" by one or more of the following commands:
  • Key Fob Activity (Any Command)
  • Door Ajar (Any Door)
  • Luggage Compartment Ajar Switch
  • Drivers Power Seat Switch
  • Power Tilt/Telescopic Steering Column
  • Headlamps/Park Lamps On
  • Key In Ignition
  • Key On Ignition
  • Anti-Theft Hood Switch
  • Brake Pedal Position Switch
  • Memory Seat Switch
