www.cargurus.com > Questions > Ford > Ranger CarGurusJun 5, 2013 - 4 wheel drive relay clicking under dash - i put my truch in 4x4 the other day and ... and watch it move (or not move) while selecting 4x4 high, low and so forth.... MY 1999 Ford Ranger 4x4 will not go in 4 wheel drive 5 answers.
Be sure to put the truck in neutral, while engine is running, while you disengage from 4 wheel drive (low) to 4 wheel drive (high) and then finally to 2 wheel drive. It is critical to shift transmission into neutral when switching out of 4WD Low, as indicated in your owner's manual. Hopefully, this will help to FixYa problem!
Sometimes this works, ABS light on, check engine light on, speedometer not working, and the automatics start shifting hard or not shifting at all? One bolt and the part is cheap, its weird how one part controls so much.
if you have locking hubs then yes. They could have been put together wrong. But if non locking then have it inspected to be sure nothing is off. It should be easy to find if something was left off.
Put manual lockers in it. And remember, you have to back up 50 feet to lock in the hubs, automatic or manual. Not doing this could cause your problem.
