When i set the timing on my 92 gmc 350 it sputters and backfires. Knew timing chain and cam.

I replaced timing chain with a double roller chain. Also added new medium lope cam, plugs, wires, tps sensor, rotor, and computer. Also new heads and valves.Problem occured before all of this happened

Yes a worn cam can cause it but it sounds more like timing off about 5 to 10 degrees

I suggest you have the injectors tested by the dealer, the sludge buildup will not cause a miss fire. to clean the throttle body use carberator spray while holding the engine idle high.

SOURCE: my 92 GMC Sierra starts and runs great for 5 to 10

Hello, I recommend changing the fuel filter. Old trucks are known to do this and I found that changing the fuel filter helps alot. After the filter change add some fuel injector cleaner and put some gas in it and see if this helps. It would not hurt to change your air filter and change your oil. Always do the cheapest things first especially in this economy. If this does not help let me know. This could also be your fuel cut off solenoid. In most vehicles these get hot and the truck just shuts off and you think it may be a loose battery wire or bad spark plug gap; sometimes it's just this solenoid. You could replace it but you can only get them at a dealership and there not cheap. You could also bypass it but I do not recommend that becuase in a case of an accident the fuel will not be shut off. I hope this fixes your problem.

SOURCE: 92 gmc 350 pickup....rough idle..have replaced MAP

This could be a couple of things:

  1. Check that you have not got any vacum leaks between inlet manifold and cylinder head.
  2. Check your spark plugs and HT leads are in good condition and not worn, reset gaps. If worn replace them.
Worse scenario is the head gasket make be leaking water into a cylinder. Get a cylinder leakage test done to verify any manifold air leaks or faulty sealing head gaskets.
Good luck, let me know how you get on.

you may have a bad egr valve.thats usually causes this. you can spend a fortune replacing sensors,i can offer an alternative if you're near an autozone or advance auto. they can code read it and the codereader will spit out the code thats the issue. free! they can code read anything up to 1999 but i'm saying most very likely a bad egr valve hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com

I have a 1984 jimmy with a 350 in it i want to put performance parts on it for more power where should i start

The best bang for the buck is a CRANE CAM AND LIFTERS will increase torque and power band, put a double roller timing chain and an aftermarket timing chain cover.
