This happened on the way to work this morning under normal driving conditions, in fact cooler than normal (60ish). Engine does not seem to be overheating, no steam. Turned on heat and could tell the temperature was modulating up and down with engine starting or stopping but temperature was about as expected. Saw a post that suggested resetting the battery and did that. Code went away and temperature gauge is working again. Did this just mask another issue? What should I do next? It is still under powertrain warranty but not sure if this would be covered or not.

Hi;
If your engine cools down when moving fast, you either have a problem with your water pump or your electric fans that cool off your radiator and a/c condenser. This is controlled by a temperature switch, but these fans should kick on instantly when A/C is selected.

The intent of the P0128 code is to indicate a faulty thermostat. Similar codes: P0125 In determining the engine did not reach a "normal" temperature, it takes into account the length of time the vehicle has been running, the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor reading, the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor reading, and the speed of the vehicle. You will likely not notice any drivability problems other than the MIL illumination. A code P0128 may mean that one or more of the following has happened: Past experience indicates that the most likely solution is to replace the thermostat.
