One thing at a time.
Once the engine cooled down, how long did you run it before the engine heated up ? The thermostat could have stuck closed.
Or the water pump impeller may have failed.
Have you checked the computer for trouble codes yet ?

Disconnect the negitive battery cable,let the computer reset 1 min.Then . reconnect. If the lite comes back Have it cheked

This vehical is notorious for problems, regardless of year 2000-2009, Same vehical as ford escape, mercury, You can disconnect the battery for 30 mins to reset indicator or You can go to most auto parts stores and have them put it on a check engine scanner for free and they can tell you what to replace plus they can clear the codes., but chances are with this vehical its going to be tranny related and big problems down the road. My friend just bought one 3 months ago with 70,000 miles and the tranny just burnt up o/d and reverse. $2000 fix. We had done a ton of research on this vehical and only found more problems. We were gonna do it ourselves but aamco had a sweet deal with warranty. Sell.Sell.Sell.

I would call the buyer to get his mechanics # to see if this has been diagnosed before. It may be you bought a lemon. If the buyer will not give this info to you then most likely you were sold something that was too expensive for them to fix. Even so your only choice is to have a shop inspect this and then fix it yourself if you choose to.

If you are running any extra systems, ie amps, subs, high watt speakers, etc. etc. you may need to get a better batter, like the blue. or yellow top one. check with auto zone.

replace the temp sending unit on the engine first

1994 dodge truck 2 wheel drive ,both have 318 engine,auto tranny fit in 2001 dodge truck, if not what years will fit

did you drain the fluid, it may have lots of metal and be really gummed up causing it to over heat and burn off. Aside from that the most commonly overlooked "check engine" proplem is the O2 sensors, there should be 2 of them
