SOURCE: check engine light on

Generally when these codes appear it is due to insufficient fuel pressure. Test your fuel pump to ensure it is within specs. Have you changed your fuel filter?

SOURCE: CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON P0171 FUEL TRIM BANK1 SYSTEM TO LEAN.

Hi. You need to clean the Mass Air Flow Sensor.
This is an easy job.
Get a can of throttle body or brake cleaner spray at your local auto parts store.

Open the hood, and locate the air filter box. follow the tube from the filter box towards the engine. Look for a small black box with 2 screws holding it to the air tube, Remove the wire connector and observe inside the sensor with a flashlight. You will see 2 small wires, and they will appear fuzzy or dirty. Spray the interior with the cleaner until the wires are nice and clean. Do not use compressed air, you will damage the sensor. Put it all back together and drive it.
This will def fix your issue. This is a vey common problem. If you do it yourself, you will save 70 + bucks.

Thanks for choosing FixYa, and a FIxYa rating for my assistance would be greatly appreciated.

This is usually an oxygen sensor, replace the O2 sensor located above the catalytic converter before replacing the evaporator purge canister.

Ive been having issues with my 2001 tacoma pre runner. The check engine light goes on and off. It read a P0171. I replaced spark plugs and MAF sensor. Light has not come back on again but engine still...

That code is P0171= system too lean (bank 1). The computer is reading a lean condition and is trying to richen up the mixture but is unable to fully compensate for the condition. That is why the engine is running so rich and you are losing mileage. You should be looking for an air leak in the intake system after the MAF, a vacuum leak into the intake manifold, or an exhaust leak at the exhaust manifold gasket or some where above the oxygen sensor. The O2 sensor is seeing excess oxygen that is unaccounted for by the MAF.

My car is 2007 jeep srt8 i have check engine light and error code p0171 and i notice a discreet gas while i was driving. what this kind of error will be?

Fault code P0171 (Bank 1 system to lean) indicates that the engine is running to lean. The gas smell you can notice is the engine trying to richen its mixture up. A quick try at fixing this is to remove and clean the MAF (mass air flow sensor). This would be located somewhere in the intake manifold or intake piping. Once clean (use electronics cleaner) let dry and re-fit. start engine and see if fault clears. Also check for broken/cracked exhaust and inlet manifolds, leaking manifold gaskets and any vacuum hose cracked/perished or fallen off.

Diagonostic trouble codes reported p0171 p0174 p0302 2001 Taurus, only reports P0171

P0171 is system too lean bank 1, P0174 is too lean bank 2, and 302 is misfire bank 1. Look for vacuum leaks. If you don't find them, put a vacuum gage on it can check. The P0171 is almost always a vacuum leak. If not other possibilities are front O2 sensor is too old and should be replaced (if mileage is greater than 100k then replace). Try injector cleaner. Misfires are usually bad spark plugs, but could possibly be caused by insufficient fuel. I've never had a car of mine in bad enough shape to have that error.
